We were shown the new A Link Between Worlds and The Wind Waker HD games at this year’s E3 Nintendo Direct, but a key Zelda title was not invited to the party. Zelda Wii U has been known to be in development for some time now and Nintendo is presumably hard at work completing the title for launch. Actually, they may be closer to finishing the project than we initially thought.

Miyamoto let the cat out of the bag during an interview with Game Informer. Hit the jump to see what he said!

Miyamoto gave this response to Game Informer when asked about Zelda Wii U:

“We’re also working on a new Wii U Zelda game. Work on that is progressing fairly concretely. In fact, we were thinking about showing it here at E3 but decided to wait just a little bit longer before sharing it with everyone.”

It appears as if we may finally get to see the first glimpse of Zelda Wii U during a Nintendo Direct later this year and possibly have a release by 2014. How long is a “little bit longer” according to Miyamoto? There’s really no way of knowing but this news is a bright light at the end of the Zelda Wii U tunnel.

We will be sure to let you know when any news regarding Zelda Wii U is announced. So as always, stay with Zelda Universe!

    I love Nintendo 😀

progressing quickly, must be another side-scroller

    • Taylor

They would never make a zelda side-scrolling game for the wii u
If they made a side-scroller it would be for the 3DS

      • jeff

thats what i thought about donkey kong

        • Higred

But Donkey Kong Country was an original donkey kong game back in SNES days

          • Triguy123

But a Donkey Kong 64 type world New Game would be gooold banana. If do, design puzzle play around Rotating Kongs again! !!! OH THE MUUUSIC !!!

what exactly do you mean by… another? you say that like it's happened… recently…

    • kkk

      Or multiplayer game, lol

    • wandersage

I get what you're saying, "progressing quickly" is maybe a scary sign. I want an epic zelda game, big, serious, incredible like what TP could have been if there was more character development and they'd filled up some of that massive empty space with more adventures, more people, more puzzles, more mystery. I don't want a small cartoony zelda game filled with gimmicks like directional controllers.

But then again, one of the most quickly developed zelda games MM, is by far my favorite with th most intricate and interesting characters and story lines. So we'll see what's up.

  • Eric Slattery

Just think of how long it takes to make a Zelda game from the ground up. At least 3 years. So let’s be patient, and we will get a masterpiece. 🙂

  • Derek

    Is that the Ordon Sword?

    • Philip Akkerman

This was just the Wii U tech demo released at an E3 a while back, which was based off of Twilight Princess, not an actual preview for the upcoming Zelda game… So I don't think you'll have to worry about the Ordon Sword being in Zelda Wii U if that's what you were implying 😛

  • Anonymous

I remember a while back Fujibayashi said that SS took a lot longer than they initially planned, so he would try to "think of something that could be done in 3 years." That was in 2011, so a 2014 release may very well be more likely than we initially thought.

      !!! THUMBS UP FOR ! PLEEEASE !!!

  • Autumn

Please let this picture be how it's going to look. Link looks mighty studly here, not gonna lie..

    • Alex

Agreed! No more of this cartoony stuff.

  • Mickii

And I got my hopes up that they would tell us more about it this e3. Oh well. I guess it can't be helped; we'll get it eventually.

  • Goliath

I'm afraid I'm going to be disappointed if it's anything less than last year's e3 tech demo. I guess what is and isn't less than something is subjective. Nintendo's done the bait and switch before (I don't think it was intentional) and I think that is really what hurt Wind Waker's initial reception back in the day.

  • Josh

I hope it's more like twilight princess, less like skyward sword…

    • Triguy123

I hope door keys in chests aren't lying around in silly areas like some of TP. *I also wish when finding heart pieces in chests the heart still floats over the chest after the opening animation, so wanting fans can enjoy the excitement of discovery while being able to play an uninterupted three heart run. OR let use the lense of "heart" got in early game and let note found locations on your map.

  • kkk

I have the fear that it will be similar like 3D World, more multiplayer oriented and 2d gameplay 🙁

  • majorasmask

As long as the majora's mask remake for the 3DS comes out after this I will be a happy nintendo fan

  • Chris

I hope that it will have the gameplay like Twilight Princess yet,Have the immense world like Skyward Sword. And I hope its nothing like what they released last year where it was like watching a movie. I want to play the game not watch it.

    • which is Why I got the Wii U and said no to the rest this gen.The one they showed was a tech Demo like Sony did with FF7 on PS3. that is also what the screen shot here is from. the tech demo. I cannot wait, but I know the wait will be woth it. Zelda would not function well as the "Movie games" of late. It can have really pretty movie sequences, but NOT the majority of the game.

      • kiz

i agree, thats what i want, but i do like the storylines tho

  • Kenzi

    Yess!! So excited!!

  • Jim

"…but decided to wait just a little bit longer before sharing it " …or the developers were desperately trying to get something done to show at E3 but failed to hit their deadline? Haha, just saying! 😉

  • Dylan

There is no excitement whatsoever. The zelda games are best played on a console. Not stupid hand held crap.

    • sanguiluna

I'll take Link's Awakening for game boy any day over that stupid Four Swords Adventures crap they released on Gamecube.

      • kiz

spirit tracks is by far worst zelda game, and i dont like to think of any of them as a bad game

  • sanguiluna

Title's a bit misleading. Miyamoto-san said the game was progressing "concretely", which means that the progress they HAVE made is pretty significant, but doesn't necessarily mean "fast." In fact I'd say you need to take your time if you want to make concrete, substantial progression.

"A delayed game is eventually good, but a bad game is bad forever."

  • Dwane

    What a tease.

i hope they r sticking with this look, and nothing too modern like spirit tracks with a train-i like my zelda to stay in medieval times!!!

  • Meh

The design of that torch in the back reminds me of Midna 😛

  • Zelda

Not sure if that's good….i want an epic zelda!

  • Midna

    Will midna be in it?!?!?!

  • Zellie4

I can feel my inner fangirl starting to wake up
