5.0 Preparing for the Labyrinth
Now that you have the Stepladder, you have total access to every hidden Heart Container in the game. For detailed instructions on how to find of these, check out our Heart Container guide.
This next labyrinth is going to require some arrows. From the starting screen head right one screen, up two screens, right one screen, up one screen, and right one screen to find a cave and four bushes in the center. Enter the cave to find a shop where you can buy some arrows for 80 rupees. Once you grab them, exit the cave, head up two screens, left two screens, up the stairs one screen, and left two screens. This will lead you to a screen with multiple columns of rocks, stairs leading north and south, and an exit to the west. This is one of the puzzles hidden in the overworld. Head up four times to make it through the puzzle and to reach the entrance to the next labyrinth, Lizard.
Make sure you have more than 100 rupees before entering Lizard Labyrinth!
5.1 The Map
There’s nothing special about the entrance hall here so enter the eastern door to encounter five Pols Voices. These things are immune to most of your items, and while you can use your sword, your bow can take them out in one shot. The downside is that using the arrows uses rupees. If you can spare the rupees, use the bow to take out all the Pols Voices to make a key appear. Grab it and backtrack to the entrance hall.
From the entrance hall, head through the northern door to enter a dark room with three Gibdos (basically stronger Stalfos). One of them will be holding a key. Light up the room with the Blue Candle, kill all of the Gibdos to unlock the northern door, and then head through it.
You’ll enter a room with another familiar boss: Dodongo! This time around, you have three to deal with. The way to beat them hasn’t changed since you last encountered these guys, so take all of them down, grab the bombs, they drop and then head through the northern door.
This next room is dark, but don’t even bother using your candle in here because the Map is right in front of us. Pick up the map and return to the previous room.
5.2 The Whistle
Back in the Dodongo room, head through the western door. It will lock behind you once you enter, leaving you with five Zols to deal with. Take them down to make a key appear and unlock the door. Grab the key and head through the south door to find a room with five Gibdos. Kill all of them, grab the bombs dropped, and then use a bomb on the western wall to open the way into the next room.
In this room you’ll find five Blue Darknuts (which are my least favorite enemies in the game). They take more hits to kill the the Red variants, and you have to kill all of them. Carefully do so, and then push the far left block to gain access to the stairwell in the center of the room.
Entering the stairwell will bring you to a side scrolling room with four Keese. Ignore them or kill them if you want, but just climb the other set of stairs to reach the next room.
The room you exit the stairs in has no enemies in it, so just unlock the western door and enter through it to find six Blue Darknuts. Carefully take all of them down, and the push the block to reveal another stairwell. This set of stairs leads to a secret passage with four Keese and the Whistle.
5.3 Bomb Upgrade
Once you grab the Whistle, backtrack to the room you came out of the double set of stairs in and head through the southern door to find six Keese and a key. You don’t have to kill the Keese in here, so grab the key and then bomb the eastern wall.
“I bet you’d like to have more bombs.”
When you enter the room you’ll find another Old Man, except he’s actually useful this time around. Pay him 100 rupees and he’ll upgrade the amount of bombs you can carry to 12. With the upgrade done, you need to return all the way to the room where you fought the Dodongos.
Travel west and north to reach the stairwell you came through before. When you reach the room where you first encountered the Blue Darknuts, continue east. The next room is full of Gibdo, and the northern door (which you came through previously) is locked. You can defeat the Gibdo, but the door will not open. Instead, place a bomb on the eastern wall to reveal a secret passage.
Travel east through the secret passage, and then north to return to the room where you battled the Dodongos.
5.4 The Compass
Head through the eastern door to enter a dark room with five Zols. You don’t need to kill the Zols here unless you want to get some rupees, so light up the room and head through the northern door.
This room will have five Gibdos in it. Kill all of them, grab the key they drop, and then head through the northern door to find three Red Darknuts. The lack of space will certainly make things harder here, but you can use the stepladder to stand on the water making you avoid taking damage. Kill all the Darknuts here to make the Compass appear. Grab it and head through the northern door.
This door leads into a dark room with two Gibdos, two Pols Voices, and two Keese. You don’t need to kill any of them, so just grab the key and head through the western door.
This room has five Gibdos. Defeat the Gibdos to make a key appear in the center of the room. Grab the key, and head through the door on the opposite side of the room.
This next room contains five Pols Voices. You don’t need to kill them, so just head through the door on the opposite side of the room.
5.5 Boss: Digdogger
This new room will introduce you to the boss of the labyrinth, Digdogger. He’s one of the easiest bosses to deal with, which is good because you also have to dodge the fireballs the four Stone Statues in the corners are throwing your way.
Just use the whistle to shrink Digdogger and then slash him up with your sword a few times to take him down. Pick up the Heart Container he leaves behind, and head through the northern door to find the next shard of the Triforce.
