The Knight Academy

After a short cutscene, you will gain control of Link in his bedroom, where he is woken by Zelda’s Loftwing, who has a letter in his beak informing Link of the Wing Ceremony the same day.

Before you leave your room, head over to the cabinet dresser near the door. You’ll find a blue rupee inside.

If you head to the north end of the hallway, you can meet up with Fledge, who will give you your first short quest. Fledge seems to be having trouble delivering barrels to the lunch lady, Henya, so you can agree to give him a bit of a hand. Slowly carry the barrels to the lunch lady. When you speak to Fledge after you’re finished, he’ll give you a red rupee as a reward.

When you’re outside, you’ll probably see the bird statue straight ahead of you. These special statues are found throughout the Sky and the Surface, and will let you save your progress.

If you walk around the outside area of the Academy for a moment, Instructor Horwell will call you from the roof, teaching you how to Z-target. Afterward, he asks you to come and talk to him on the roof. He also teaches you how to dash upwards along large objects like crates. When he’s done explaining, use A to dash and run up the side of the stacked boxes near fence. Climb up onto the ledge, and then run over the gap to jump to the next spot where Instructor Horwell is waiting.

When you talk to Horwell, he will ask you to find Headmaster Kaepora Gaebora’s cat, Mia. Go past Horwell, and you’ll find a ledge on the second floor of the building that you can run up and grab onto. Very carefully move to the left around to the other side of the building. Horwell will give you some more advice at that point, telling you how to push blocks. Push the wooden box up against the building and then climb up it to reach the roof. There you’ll find Mia. Pick her up and jump off the roof, then return to Horwell. Horwell then mentions that Kaepora Gaebora should be at the Statue of the Goddess.

Along the way, you’ll meet Jakamar, who teaches you how to use the Bird Statue save points. When you’re done talking to him, ascend the set of stairs and you’ll end up in another cut-scene.

The Missing Loftwing

After the cutscene ends and you regain control of Link, head back over to where you met Jakamar. When you talk to him, he will mention that he saw Groose’s bird chasing Link’s Loftwing. When you’re done with Jakamar, head over to Instructor Horwell. Link will give him the news of his Loftwing. You can also speak to Karane; she can be found standing outside the Knight Academy. She will mention that Pipit knows something about Link’s missing Loftwing. Enter the double doors and you will be on the second floor of the Academy.

If you turn to the right, you’ll find a gate here that has now been opened. Run down the steps and speak to a young boy named Gully. He will teach you how to roll into a tree. He then asks you for your help. All you have to do is dash with the A button and roll by shaking the Nunchuck. If you successfully roll into the tree that Gully pointed out, a Sky Stag Beetle will come flying out, and Gully will go to chase after it. A blue rupee will also fall out, so go collect it. Continue down the path. You can explore Skyloft as much as you want now, but the next spot you want to explore is the huge tower at the south end of Skyloft, near a large pier-like area.

When you get to the tower, you’ll run into Groose and his underlings, Cawlin and Stritch. Another cutscene will start, where Link manages to find out a little more about his missing Loftwing. After giving Groose and his underlings a proper yelling, Zelda agrees to help Link by flying around the island in search of Link’s bird.

The first place you want to go is to the Sparring Hall, which is located behind the Academy. When you arrive, you’ll find Pipit and Fledge. After speaking with Pipit, it will be revealed that Fledge knew all along what Groose had done to Link’s bird but was threatened not to tell. After you’re done talking to the boys, enter the Sparring Hall.

Inside, you’ll find Knight Commander Eagus. He will tell you that if you want to practice, you can get the Practice Sword found in the treasure chest in the back room of the Hall. When you go back into the main room, Eagus will begin to give you lessons on how to use the sword.

The next thing you have to do is go check around for the Loftwing, which, according to Pipit and Fledge, should be near the Waterfall at the northeast side of the floating city. You can pull up your Map with “+” on the WiiMote so you can check where the spot was located on your map. While you’re heading to the location, you can converse with a few of the other townsfolk, if you like. When you make it to the waterfall, you can leap across the rocks to make it to the other side.

When you make it to the cave, chop down the logs with your sword to make it inside. Now you can enter the Waterfall Cave.

There’s really nothing else to do here, so continue on until you find the exit. There is a bird statue outside, so save your game. Head down the ramp and you will find Link’s Loftwing, trapped behind some wooden planks.

Take your sword and cut the ropes that are holding the planks together; this will require you to use a bit of directional slashing.

After another cutscene, Link will jump off the ledge. Calling your Loftwing simply requires you to press down on the Wii Remote D-Pad. You’ll be taken through a tutorial on how to fly Link’s Crimson Loftwing.

The Wing Ceremony

A cutscene starts with Zelda and then Groose, Cawlin, and Stritch. It is revealed that the reward for winning the Wing Ceremony Race is Zelda’s Sailcloth, which she made herself and wears over her shoulders like a sash. At the end of the cutscene, the Wing Ceremony is ready to begin.

When you begin the race, you must leap off the ledge with the other contestants, so begin running the moment the signal sounds. The trick to winning this race is to not directly chasing the Loftwing. Instead, you should fly above it by flapping your wings with the Wii Remote, until you get closer and can dive down towards it by pointing the Wii Remote downwards. The diving allows you to gain speed and get closer to it.

Another good thing to remember is keeping a close eye on the Loftwing’s movements. Like the other Loftwings, it will begin to tilt in the direction it’s turning, so once you see it turn, quickly swoop in and grab the statuette. When you are close enough, the A button command to grab it will flash onscreen. Unfortunately, Groose will start to fly over you and hit you with his own bird, which will slow you down. After that, Cawlin and Stritch will actually begin to throw eggs at you, so try to stay out of their line of fire. You’ll have to do the above process again.

After you win the race, a cutscene will initiate, where Zelda presents Link with the Sailcloth. When Zelda gives you the Sailcloth, your next task is to jump off the platform and land near the center circle below. This can be tricky, but as long as you don’t move the Wii Remote around too much, you should be able to land near the center. When you’re close enough, press B to use the Sailcloth.

Obtaining the Goddess Sword

After the cutscene, you will be back in Link’s room at the Knight Academy. Leave the room, and you’ll see a strange person floating near the steps. Follow her to the second floor, and then outside. Continue to follow her, and soon you’ll end up back at the Goddess Statue.

Keep following the stranger, until you reach a ledge. The wall on the left is climbable, so climb up and grab onto the ledge. Then shimmy your way around the corner.

While you’re following the stranger, you’ll run into a few Keese. After defeating them and moving on, you’ll have to dash up a steep area. There’s another Chuchu here, but this one is bigger and will break up into smaller pieces when you attack it. Kill the smaller ones as soon as you can before they combine again.

Jump over the ledge and then jump onto the vines, and climb your way around the statue. You’ll be automatically moved to the front-side of the Goddess Statue. The person will open up a doorway that leads inside the statue. Follow her inside.

A cutscene initiates, and we learn that the person’s name is Fi and a bit about who she is. When the cutscene ends, head on over to the Goddess Sword and release it from its pedestal.

Kaepora Gaebora will show up and join you, and the cutscene will continue. Fi then gives Link the Emerald Tablet and teaches you the Skyward Strike. Now that you know this new move, go up to the altar and use it on the blue wing emblem in front of you.

A panel will show up, where Link places the tablet. The cutscene continues and shows a green light being exposed through the clouds somewhere outside of Skyloft, which will guide Link to an area below the clouds.

After discussion with Gaebora, you can exit the room, where you’ll meet up with Fledge. Fledge gives Link the Adventure Pouch, which will allow you to store items and gear inside. It can currently hold up to four things inside, but it can always be upgraded later.

You can pretty much explore most of the Knight Academy now, so go ahead and check out the rooms. When you’re done exploring, leave through the double doors on the first floor. Speaking with Instructor Owlan outside will score you a Wooden Shield. It’s the weakest of all the shields and is susceptible to fire, but you can upgrade it to many different forms later. And even if the shield burns and you lose it, you can always purchase a new one at the Bazaar later.

There is a training area for the shield in the Sparring Hall, so if you’d like to learn some basics to using the shield, Commander Eagus can teach you how. When you’re done there, head back to the Knight Academy and then go south. Fi will emerge from the sword and suggest that you find a shield and some potions. We already have the shield, so now we can head to the Bazaar in the center of Skyloft to buy some potions. It should also be noted that you can now change your onscreen interface, if you feel it’s too crowded.

Head down the steps from the south side of the Academy and then take a left onto another stairwell. You’ll end up at a huge tent-like building. This is the Bazaar.

The first person we want to talk to is the potion shop owner, Luv, who can be found near the back of the tent. Speak to her, and she’ll give you a free bottle to store potions in. So go ahead and buy some red potion, which you can store in your bottle. When you’re done in the Bazaar, exit the tent.

Now we can leave Skyloft and check out the land that’s hidden below the clouds. Head over to any of the piers located around Skyloft, and jump off, calling your Loftwing with “+”. Once you’re flying, head straight for the green beam that’s coming through the clouds. Now, you have two choices: you can either fly over the hole, jump off, and try to land in the hole, or you can just fly straight into the hole with your Loftwing and have Link jump off automatically.
