3. Moblin Hideout

by on September 19, 2019

Return to Mabe Village

When you leave Tail Cave, the Owl will greet you and suggest that you head to Goponga Swamp. The swamp is north of Mabe Village, so the village is your next destination.

Now that you have Roc’s Feather, you can jump over the holes in the path to make the return trip a bit quicker. Continue northwest to reach the entrance of Mabe Village where two boys are usually playing catch.

Except those two boys aren’t playing catch. Instead, they’re actually rather panicked because Moblins stormed into Mabe Village while you were away. The boys don’t tell you exactly what happened, but they do direct you to Madam MeowMeow’s cottage in the village.

Madam MeowMeow’s house is northeast of the library where the two boys play catch. When you arrive, you will notice something very different about it this time. BowWow, the Chain Chomp that stood guard in front of the house, is gone! To investigate, head inside.

Madam MeowMewo is beside herself with terror. Someone has kidnapped her… dog(?). The Moblins are to blame, and that means you should head off in hot pursuit of them.

Travel through the Mysterious Forest again

The Moblin Base is north of the Mysterious Forest to the east of Goponga Swamp. How convenient. Enter the forest through the entrance north of the Mabe Village well.

Navigating the forest should be old hat by now since you have already walked across it multiple times. First, travel east to reach the first cave you explored that led to the Toadstool. Then, turn north until you find the second cave entrance that is blocked by boulders. Finally, turn east to reach the edge of the forest.

The Moblin Hideout is not far from the edge of the forest.

When you find the Piece of Heart surrounded by the cross-shaped pits, use Roc’s Feather to jump across. Pick up the Piece of Heart and then travel north across the pit before turning east to find the Moblin Hideout. You will know you found the right entrance by when you see an Owl Statue near a cave (if the Moblin decorations aren’t a big enough give away).

GameBoy Only: Same Place, New Look

The Nintendo Switch remake made the Moblin Hideout look more visually distinct.

It was originally just a normal cave entrance with some spiral carvings around the door. If you are having trouble finding it, look for the Owl Statue outside the cave entrance.

DX Version Only: Say “Fuzzy Pickles”… Wait, wrong game

The Game Boy Color DX remake of Link’s Awakening includes a unique feature not found in the original or the Nintendo Switch remake: A camera shop.

A photographer will take your picture at key moments in the game, but you need to visit the Camera Shop before any of the other pictures will be taken. You can easily miss some of the photo opportunities, so it’s best to visit now to get started! The Camera Shop is just to the east of the Moblin Hideout.

Infiltrate the Moblin Hideout

When you find the Moblin Hideout, enter the cave and get ready for the Moblin onslaught.

First, you will face off with a Sword Moblin. This is probably the second most difficult encounter in the hideout, but it’s not a great challenge. It’s only slightly challenging because the Sword Moblin can parry your attacks with its sword, but you have likely fought a Sword Moblin before.

Just remember to be careful about the cracked floors around the room. When you defeat the Sword Moblin, the door north will open.

Four more Moblins await you in the next room, but they only attack with thrown spears. They should be extremely easy to defeat. Dispatch all four, and again the door will open and allow you through.

Boss: King Moblin

Finally, you will fight the main baddie, the King Moblin. He’ll lambast you for coming to rescue the pooch, and he swears he’ll make sure you never leave his hideout alive. But you can teach him that you won’t go down without a fight.

From the start, King Moblin is invulnerable to every attack. Instead, start on the defensive. Prepare your Shield and Sword and stand on one side of the room, opposite King Moblin. The king, like his minions, will begin throwing spears in your direction. Use your Shield to block King Moblin’s attacks.

After throwing several spears, King Moblin will become enraged, wave his hands in the air, and then charge at you.

Wait until he has started charging, and then quickly move out of the way. If you time it properly, King Moblin will run straight into the wall and stun himself. If he isn’t fooled, you either need to stand closer to the wall or wait longer before dodging out of the way. But if you were successful and King Moblin is stunned, quickly attack him with your Sword until he gets back to his feet.

The rest of the fight continues in the same pattern. King Moblin will continue to throw spears, become enraged, charge at you, and bash himself into the wall headfirst. Each time he is stunned, you have an opening to attack until he is defeated.

When King Moblin is defeated, enter the room to the east to find BowWow tied to a stone. Approach the stone to free BowWow. He will be joining you on your adventure for a while!
