Fast Rupees
  1. 1 The rupee farm
  2. 2 The Trendy Game
  3. 3 Rupee chests

You’re going to need a lot of Rupees in this game. If you go for optional Bow and Arrows—which I highly recommend you do given how useful it will end up being—you’re going to need to spend at least 1,490 Rupees to get through the game. Given that a large number of those Rupees will be single Rupees that you pick up off of the ground from defeating enemies, it’s helpful to know how to grind for them. There are a few extremely useful ways of grinding for cash.

1 The rupee farm

la-rupees1aRequirements: Bombs, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots

Grinding to get the Rupees necessary to acquire both the Shovel and later the Bow and then later the Frog’s Song of Soul can be quite the grind. If only there was a spot that allowed you to make an infinite number of Rupees.

Thankfully for you, there is such a place! This is by far the quickest pathway to amassing infinite Rupees (or at least up until you reach your wallet’s capacity of 999).

The power of color (DX Version only)
Except for the Rupees found within chests, all Rupees you pick up off the ground are worth the same value because of the lack of color. The Color Dungeon exposes Rupees of a different, more valuable color, but as such it’s limited to the DX version of the game.
You'll only have to reach the third room of the dungeon, which isn't that bad.

You’ll only have to reach the third room of the dungeon, which isn’t that bad.

Once you are able to enter the Color Dungeon, head to the Cemetery and push the gravestones according to the Color Dungeon code to access it. Sneak north past the two sentries guarding the dungeon and defeat the Camo Goblins that you’ll find in the next room. Head east, and then you can find a weakened wall on the south side that you can Bomb your way through.

In that room, you’ll find 28 green Rupees. Most of the Rupees you’ll find in the game are blue; those are worth a measly one Rupee. However, the green ones are worth five each, meaning that in total you can collect 140 Rupees.

Better yet, though, is that leaving the dungeon causes them to respawn when next you enter. So head back to the beginning, head up the stairs, push the gravestones again, and head to the fourth room to get another set of 140. Rinse an repeat until you have as many Rupees as you need.

2 The Trendy Game

la-rupees2aRequirements: 10 Rupees

For all intents and purposes, the Rupee Farm is the fastest way to infinite cash. However, you can’t access the Color Dungeon right away, and there is the rare chance that you’re playing the original version of the game. There is still a methodology to get infinite Rupees, but this pathway is much, much slower.

Head to the southeast corner of Mabe Village and enter the shop you find there. You’ll discover the Trendy Game, the hot, new craze that’s sweeping the town. For 10 Rupees, you can maneuver a crane to attempt to pick up a prize on a conveyor belt. The advantage is that the conveyor belt moves at a constant speed, so it is inherently predictable and thus can be gamed.

First move your crane left so that it is hovering over the leftmost conveyor belt (the one that’s moving down). Then, simply tap down the moment that the item you want is in the middle of the rightmost conveyor (the one moving up). If you snag one of the two red Rupees going around the conveyor, you’ll pick up 30 Rupees for a net profit of 20.

You can perform this trick twice (there are two red Rupees) before you need to exit, but you can always re-enter to spawn them again. It takes a lot longer to reach 999 with this trick, but it’s still possible!

3 Rupee chests

Throughout Koholint, there are 40 chests containing Rupees (in the original version—in the DX version, there are only 36), and each one of them contains any number from 20 Rupees all the way to the ultra-rare 200 Rupee prize. Collecting each chest along the way will be able to net you all the extra items in the game. However, the chests on their own won’t provide enough Rupees on their own by the times it’s recommended to buy the items from the shop; you’ll still need to pick up some Rupees from enemies (or visit the Rupee farms) along the way.

Here’s where you can find each of the chests (in order of your ability to collect them):

3.1 Mysterious Forest: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-1a

Requirements: Sword

Within the Mysterious Forest is a log tunnel that, if one journeys through it, will lead towards the Magic Mushroom, which can then be upgraded to the Magic Powder at the Witch’s Hut. The first room of this tunnel has a treasure chest with Rupees accessible once the wooden stakes are cut down so the boulder in front of it can be moved.

3.2 Tail Cave: 20 Rupees

la-rupees3-2a

Requirements:Tail Key

Twenty Rupees can be uncovered inside the Tail Cave. Though this chest starts out invisible and only appears after all the enemies in the room have been defeated, you will pass by the room on the critical route. One room west of the second key you’ll find a single Mini-moldorm wandering about. Kill it to cause the chest to appear.

3.3 West of Goponga Swamp: 20 Rupees

Requirements: Roc’s Feather

Just north of Mr. Write’s house, which is north of the Mysterious Forest, you can find a small cave cut into the mountainside. Enter inside it to find a treasure chest on the other side of a gap. Jump over to collect your Rupees.

3.4 Goponga Swamp: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-4a

Requirements: BowWow

While working your way towards Bottle Grotto with BowWow, you should make sure you grab the chest in the lower-right area of the swamp. It’s blocked by a large Goponga Flower and thus requires BowWow’s expert teeth. Open it up for your 50-Rupee reward.

3.5 Bottle Grotto: 20 Rupees

la-rupees3-5aRequirements: BowWow

While fighting through Bottle Grotto, you’ll encounter the mini-boss Hinox. Continue past him by following the only route that you can travel. Eventually you’ll come across a treasure chest that is partially surrounded by clay pots. Even without the Power Bracelet, you can open it up for 20 Rupees.

3.6 Bottle Grotto: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-6a

Requirements: BowWow, Power Bracelet

You’ll actually spot this chest before the one above it, but you can’t get it right away. The first room has a treasure chest that’s completely surrounded by clay pots that you can’t lift… at least until you get the Power Bracelet. Once you get the dungeon’s item, return to this room via the mini-boss warp or after you’ve defeated the dungeon to retrieve the cash.

3.7 West of Goponga Swamp: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Power Bracelet

Revisit the cave just north of Mr. Write’s house. There are actually two entrances, though it doesn’t matter which one you enter as the two are connected inside. However, there is a chest found by the right entrance trapped behind a skull. Lift up the skull to gain the Rupees inside.

3.8 Dream Shrine: 100 Rupees

la-rupees3-8aRequirements: Power Bracelet

In the northeastern corner of Mabe Village, there’s a strange little shack protected by boulders. Lift up the boulders, walk in, and then take a nap in the bed inside. You’ll dream of another world. This mini-dungeon is filled with Arm-mimics, and they can only be killed with Spin Attacks or Dash Attacks. Use the sword and Roc’s Feather, walking carefully across the crumbled floor. The first treasure chest in the room holds 100 Rupees, but you’ll need the Pegasus Boots to get the second chest.

3.9 Toronbo Shores: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-9aRequirements: Power Bracelet

Return to Toronbo Shores once you have the Power Bracelet. At the eastern edge of the shores, you’ll see the sand of the beach fade away to grassy hillside, but two rocks blocking a treasure chest serve as a barrier. That chest will contain the 50-Rupee prize.

3.10 Ukuku Prairie cave: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Power Bracelet

There’s a cave in Ukuku Prairie just one screen to the right of the Dream Shrine. Journey into the cave to see a treasure chest that’s blocked by a handful of movable stones. You’ll have to be careful about moving those stones because of the crumbling floor, however.

Obtaining the Rupees

Step One Enter in this cave just east of the boundary of Mabe Village.

3.11 Tal Tal Mountain Range: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-11aRequirements: Power Bracelet

While you don’t need to go to Tal Tal Mountain Range for a while, you can get this chest early. If you find the staircase leading up to the Wind Fish’s Egg at the top of the screen, descend the staircase and then go right one screen to find a second staircase. Go north, and lift up the stones to enter the cave. Follow the pathway and open up a pathway to the staircase. Continue following the cavern trail until you find the first exit leading outside. Once back in the overworld, you’ll find the chest containing 50 Rupees.

3.12 Key Cavern: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-12aRequirements: Slime Key

Just to the west of the Dodongo Snakes’ room, you will find a room inhabited with two red Zols and a Stalfos. This room is also identifiable as there’s a one-way door going in and a one-way door going out. If you defeat all the enemies, a chest will appear on an not-yet-accessible overlook. Head north and then back south to access the chest.

RETCONNED LAYOUT
This chest contains Rupees only for the DX version of Link’s Awakening. Several chests in Key Cavern were switched in order to make the dungeon feel more intuitive to players. In the original version of the game, the chest with 50 Rupees is the room just directly north of the one containing Chest #13, where the Stone Beak exists in the DX version.

3.13 Key Cavern: 200 Rupees

Requirements: Slime Key, Pegasus Boots

Once you have the Pegasus Boots, return to the start of the dungeon. Head north one room, and then take the northwest exit, breaking through the crystalline barriers in the room following. Kill the small Gel on the left side of the room, and then return to the other side of the room by heading south twice, then north twice. Kill the two remaining Stalfos to cause the chest to appear.

In the original version of the game, the chest with 200 Rupees is the room just southeast of this one, where the Map exists in the DX version.

3.14 Ukuku Prairie cave: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Pegasus Boots

One screen west of the tree where you obtain the Honeycomb, you will find a cave that must be opened with a Bomb. Inside Sparks guard walls made of immovable stones and crystalline barriers. To reach the chest, use the Pegasus Boots to break the crystals, head north, and then return south via the other direction. Break the last crystalline barrier and then move the boulder adjacent to it left.

3.15 Angler’s Tunnel: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-15aRequirements: Flippers

Early in the dungeon, just north of the room where you obtain the Stone Beak, you will find a treasure chest on an icy surface that’s able to be reached as deep water separates you from it. Once you have the Flippers, return to this room so you can swim to the chest.

3.16 Angler’s Tunnel: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-16aRequirements: Flippers

Two rooms south and one room west of mini-boss Cue Ball’s room, there will be a chest that’s only able to be reached by swimming across deep water. Once you have the Flippers, the 50 Rupees inside are yours.

3.17 Rapids Ride: 40 Rupees (20×2)

la-rupees3-17aRequirements: Flippers, 100 Rupees

To the far east of Angler’s Tunnel is the office for the Rapids Ride. If you don’t have the Hookshot yet, the only way to access this shop is via the open tunnel east of Face Shrine. Pay 100 Rupees to go on the Rapids Ride so that you can access the Raft. You’ll have the choice of falling down two waterfalls; fall down the left one as far left as possible. Hug the left wall, and this will eventually push you down another waterfall, which will lead you to the first chest on an island. Continue drifting right, and the next screen will also contain a similar treasure chest. (Do note that this is unfortunately not the ideal route for earning Rupees on this ride as you cannot make much of a profit along this route, if any. As such, these are only here for completion’s sake.)

3.18 Tal Tal Mountain Range: 100 Rupees (20×5)

Requirements: Flippers

Head into Tal Tal Mountain Range and journey to the point where you jumped off the cliff to reach Angler’s Tunnel. However now continue east as far as you can, reaching a tunnel at the end of the road. Head in, and place a Bomb on the one dry spot of land. This will eventually lead you up a staircase and to a room with five chests.

Opening all five treasure chests

Step One You'll need to Bomb this tile in the cave to open a secret entrance.

Step One You’ll need to Bomb this tile in the cave to open a secret entrance.

Step Two When you get to the room with the chests, do not open them. You can't open all five by coming from the north, and if you open any and leave the screen, the rest will be automatically emptied. Instead, push boulders out of the way to exit the cave.

3.19 Catfish’s Maw: 200 Rupees

la-rupees3-19aRequirements: Hookshot

Once you have the Hookshot, return to the T-junction near the beginning of the dungeon, just east of the room where you obtained the Compass. There’s a one-space gap on the right side of the room that you can travel through. Head through that one-square gap, and you will see a treasure chest on the opposite side of a pit. Use the Hookshot to snag the chest and drag Link to the other side. It will contain 200 Rupees. Use the block on the left side to Hookshot your way back.

3.20 Catfish’s Maw: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-20aRequirements: Hookshot

Just north of the four-way junction with the X-shaped blocks and the floor switch, you will find a treasure chest on the opposite side of a few squares of hole. Use the Hookshot to drag yourself to the treasure chest to grab 50 Rupees.

3.21 Catfish’s Maw: 50 Rupees

la-rupees3-21aRequirements: Hookshot

Just to the north of the previous chest, you will find another chest on the opposite side of the room. Use the Hookshot to grab the extendable bridge just in front of the chest to elongate it towards you. Cross the bridge to grab the Rupees.

3.22 Mysterious Forest: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Hookshot

Once you have the Hookshot, head one screen to the east of where you obtained the Tail Key. You will see a small log tunnel that’s blocked by rocks. If you go in, you’ll find vast pits that separate you from a treasure chest. Thankfully, the Hookshot will cling onto each of the boulders within and deliver you safely to the chest.

3.23 Tal Tal Mountain Range: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Hookshot

Just inside the cave from where you obtained Rupee Chest #11, you will see another chest inside. This chest is separated from you by a large void. The Hookshot will gladly grapple onto the chest and pull you across to it so that you can collect the Rupees within.

3.24 Tal Tal Mountain Range: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Hookshot

Travel through the cavern system found by heading west from the Hen House in Tal Tal Mountains. Once you emerge from the cave, Boulders will start raining down upon you. Climb up the switchbacks and avoid the enemies. Once you make it to the top of the mountain bluff, the screen just to the west will provide a treasure chest containing 50 Rupees.

3.25 Face Shrine: 50 Rupees

Requirements: Hookshot

A chest containing 50 Rupees is close to the dungeon entrance. From the entrance, head west, and you will find several Wizzrobes in the room. Kill them all using either Bombs or Arrows (Bombs are way more effective, however). Once you kill them all, the sealed door to the north will open. Enter into that room to gain some Rupees.

3.26 Face Shrine: 100 Rupees

Requirements: L-2 Power Bracelet

Once you get the L-2 Power Bracelet, head north to the room where you find the Shy Guy. Pick up the Elephant Statue in the room and hurl it into the sealed door on the eastern wall. It will crack open. Once within, you will find a chest containing 100 Rupees.

3.27 Face Shrine: 100 Rupees

Requirements: L-2 Power Bracelet

This chest hides in the far northwest of the Face Shrine. After you navigate several tricky rooms involving Crystal Switches and their blocks, you will find the room with a Compass. Manipulate the Crystal Switch in this room such that you have access to the sealed door north. Lift an Elephant Statue, and throw it at the door. Inside you will find 100 Rupees.

3.28 Face Shrine: 200 Rupees

Requirements: L-2 Power Bracelet

The far northeastern tip of the dungeon is where the big Rupee prize is. After going through the two side-scrolling areas just after the mini-boss Smasher, defeat the three Pol’s Voices to head north. Avoid the Sparks as you lift up the clay pots in the room. Once you reach the northeastern tip, hit the Crystal Switch (if needed) to access the chest.

The technicolor chest
In the original version of the game, this chest only contained 50 Rupees. The DX version raised the value of this chest to 200 in order to help players pay Mamu for the Frog’s Song of Soul, especially seeing how they removed one of the other Rupee chests in the dungeon.

Whilst avoiding the Beamos’ lasers, you’ll need to toss the two horse heads such that they land standing up. Once you do so, a chest will appear. If you have the Secret Medicine, you’ll earn 100 Rupees. Elsewise, you’ll get the Secret Medicine.
