How to Reliably Spawn the Lord of the Mountain in Breath of the Wild

by on December 6, 2021

The Lord of the Mountain is a unique horse-like creature in Breath of the Wild that appears on Satori Mountain, under a cherry blossom tree together with a group of Blupees. It has interesting lore that explains it is the reincarnation of a sage that died on the mountain and now protects the land. It is also known as Satori.

If the player is stealthy enough, they can mount the Lord of the Mountain and ride it around for a while. It has unlimited stamina, making it the fastest mount in the game. However, once you dismount from it, it will disappear.

The Lord of the Mountain may seem to spawn randomly and unpredictably, but there is a pattern to it. You can consistently prompt it to spawn if you follow the right sequence.

This method works on both the Wii U and Switch versions.

How to Spawn the Lord of the Mountain on Satori Mountain

  1. The Lord of the Mountain will always spawn at a random time on the day of a crescent moon. It will then remain for 24 hours following the time it spawned (e.g. if it spawns at 8am, it will remain until 8am the following day).
  1. The moon follows a pattern over 8 days, so all you need to do is pass time until you are on the night of the crescent moon. The pattern is as follows:
    1. New moon
    2. Crescent moon
    3. Seven-day moon
    4. 13th-day moon
    5. Full moon
    6. Smaller moon
    7. Third-quarter moon
    8. 26th-day moon
  1. You can check what moon is out by talking to an NPC called Hino at the Dueling Peaks stable.
  1. Once you know what moon is out, you can then rest at a nearby fire for as many nights as it takes to get to the crescent moon night.
  1. Once you are on a crescent moon night, the Lord of the Mountain will spawn on Satori Mountain at a random time, sometime within the next 24 hours. You can tell it has spawned when you see a green glow on the mountain.
  1. A good way to wait is to warp to a nearby location, such as the Central Tower. This tower gives you a good vantage point of Satori Mountain so you can see when the glow appears. Plus, it protects you from night-spawning enemies while you wait.
  1. You must wait for time to pass naturally until the green glow appears on the mountain. You cannot prompt it to spawn faster by waiting at a fire and moving past its spawn time.
  1. Once the green glow appears, you can then run over to the mountain or warp to a nearby Shrine, such as Mogg Latan Shrine or Sheem Dagoze Shrine. Doing so will not despawn the Lord of the Mountain.

To ensure it spawns successfully, you should be aware of how your actions may or may not prevent it from spawning:

  • You must not be on Satori Mountain while waiting for it to spawn. This will prevent it from doing so and you will have to wait until the next crescent moon.
  • You must not pass time by waiting at a fire to prompt it to spawn quicker. This will stop it from spawning and you will have to wait until the next crescent moon. You must let time pass naturally.
  • Before it’s spawned, you can safely warp as much as you like (e.g. to shrines and towers). Doing so will not prevent it from spawning.
  • Once it has spawned, you can safely rest at a fire. This will not cause it to despawn.
  • Once it’s spawned, you can also safely warp to shrines and towers. This will not cause it to despawn.
  • If you save your game and load, the glow will despawn from where you are if it was visible, but this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s despawned for the rest of the day. You can sometimes warp to another area that is further away and it will respawn. However, this doesn’t appear to be consistent, so you will have to warp to a few areas with good vantage points to see if it has respawned.

Further tips:

If you know the amount of nights to rest after checking with Hino, you don’t necessarily need to check with him every night, as the moon follows a set pattern (as stated above), so you could do this at another location if you wish.

For example, once you know what moon night you’re on, you could warp to the Central Tower and rest by a fire, counting the nights down to the crescent moon. But if you want to confirm that you’re on a crescent moon night, you can talk to Hino anytime and he will tell you which you’re on. Remember, you can safely warp around as much as you want before it spawns.

Hino will be inside the stable if it’s raining. If he is, he won’t be able to tell you what moon night it is. This can sometimes be a pain if you’ve lost track of what night it is. If this happens, you can either cycle through the nights until you’re back on track or look out for the crescent moon in the sky.
