• I'm also popping in to say it's nice to see a familar face return to the forums :) And yeah, this forum software is a handful lol

Posted by Viajero de la Galaxia

    • YEAH I legitimately struggle with it, especially this "my page" interface part. I'm not sure how active I will be, because uni is fairly busy and all, but then I logged in and familiar faces really do urge you to stay, you know? :) How have you been for the past... uh one year I think? :D

      Posted by Nesi

    • these emoticons are awful oh my god -- also how do I communicate without facebook stickers

      Posted by Nesi

    • I've been doing well, a lot has happened in the past year for me lol. Uni has been really busy - I still get enough time to be active on ZU (but I also don't have much of a social life outside of that haha). What exactly is it that you do for research? I've heard you mention that you do research, but didn't know what it was specifically.

  • Welcome back! :D I'm very glad you're well.

    • Okay, so I don't even know how to handle this site, so I'm not sure I'm doing it right, but hi! I really miss you! I actually went as far as to e-mail you, but I'm not sure you've received it... What's your preferred platform where you talk to people? It'd be so nice to catch up.

      Posted by Nesi

    • That is very understandable :p I think the "conversation" thing here (instead of pm) works well enough now. But I didn't get an e-mail, no. It's, by the way :)

      Posted by Moriquendi

    • I almost effectively reported you just now, because I saw "rep-", and assumed it was reply.

  • I thought I'd manage to lure you out with the Eurovision thread :3

  • Hey I'm new to Din and wanted to join the Skype group. Mind adding me? Once you respond, I'll give you my Skype. :P

  • Hi Nesi! I'd like to take the Clan Test. If you could get back to me I'd greatly appreciate it! :)

  • Hallöchen! (Kein Problem!)

Syntax is more of a hobby/passion than directly related to my field, you are right, although there is some crossover when it comes to mental grammar/lexical representation in the brain/etc. :D

Haha, that's awesome. We like to think the Maritimes is the best as well. Yes, French is mandatory until high school (grade 10). Sadly, it doesn't mean everyone speaks French fluently, but almost everyone understands the language to some level, and every label on consumables, government forms, and things of that nature are bilingual, which is pretty cool. The dominant French force in my area is Acadian French, which is a pretty charming dialect and culture (Québécois is further west). So I'm certainly thankful for having that, but I still can't wait to experience Europe!

Good points on Esperanto. I'm in the "hobby for linguists" category, though I also appreciate the goal of it. I love inflected languages and free word order, but I think the accusative case is something that could have been dropped for simplicity. All the same, it was actually really useful to learn it before learning German and delving into the world of noun declensions, being an innocent preposition-reliant English L1. :) Anyway, I'm sure you understand the drive of "languages! I want to learn them all!" and Esperanto was appealing because I could pick it up quickly and had a bunch of online resources to peruse for self-study. I'd recommend checking it out someday.

  • Hi, I am half-Finnish, as well as Finnish citizen. My mother is straight off the boat (well, I mean it's been a while since she stepped off the metaphorical boat). I would like to say that your sig and av are giving me crazy nostalgia. Please, buy all the 1990 Muumi series DVDs and send them to the US--my family over there doesn't seem to keen on doing that.

PS: I don't speak Finnish, sadly. I am highly disappointed in myself. I'll learn it after I learn Japanese.

No don't get wet, you are not to get sick at all. I forbid it.

  • Hey Nesi. Thanks for letting us vicariously experience Finland! I've been enjoying your writing.

I am not going to bother you too much with my linguistic shocks
I don't know much about Scandinavian linguistics, but there are those of us who are interested in linguistic tangents. :D
I'm writing down everything I can with IPA for comparison, so that still leaves me on track of what's going on in standard Swedish.
Good idea, and I agree with your decision to focus on the local dialect. Glad you've been enjoying it. ^__^ I couldn't imagine studying languages without the IPA anymore - it's been incredibly helpful. Do you still study linguistics, or have you completed your program?

Another question I've been meaning to ask you - do you have an opinion about Esperanto? Personally, I'm a fan of the language, but it seems to have quite a bad reputation among linguists, at least from my experience. Also, if you'd ever like to practice a language, feel free to message me in French, German, or Esperanto. :) I'm hoping to get going with Japanese soon, too - I had started picking up a few things here and there but ended up delaying it to learn German.

  • Det är sorgligt, instämmer helt.
Jag må inte ha appen på min telefon men jag har alltid det öppet i webläsaren på stationära datorn.
