I'll have to dig a little bit to find it on the net. Or ask Eric. He would probably know better than me.
I'm not passing my opinion off as fact. Maybe it's coming across that way. I am speaking from considerable experience, though. So forgive me if I feel that my educated guess is a little more founded than yours. However, what does annoy me, is that you dismiss is so easily. And yes, you do need evidence to support your side of the debate. You said it yourself.
And we all know that, with there being no solid evidence either for or against God, any conclusions drawn are speculation.
You haven't actually backed up your argument, you've just said mine is invalid. I could just as easily say your points are speculation every time you try to defend Skyrim, and we would be running around in circles.
In summary, what I'm saying is this: I'm trying to back up my argument, you aren't backing up yours. What you're doing is trying to claim my argument as invalid, in the process not reinforcing yours.
Anyway, let me add this to my side of the argument: Bethesda is a company that hardcodes straight into the source code in their games (so they can reuse it in later games - see my "bethesda is lazy" point). Ever wonder why all ladders in their games lead to load screens? Cause they once tried to make a climbable ladder, and it crashed their whole build. Now imagine how much motivation they would need to code a dragon when a climbable ladder crashes their game.
Basically, if the head of 2K or EA came along and gave you an educated guess on Skyrim, you would find a way to make them sound like they don't know what they are talking about, even though they've been working in the industry for years and know a lot of development procedures.
The problem here is that I'm giving you an educated guess, and you're saying it's speculation. Well, everything in the game industry beyond the developer's own walls is speculation, so everything you say against my argument (although I have yet to see anyone put up a proper challenge against mine) is also speculation. So let's just throw that point out the window.
And what I am currently doing is backing up my argument. You're just saying "all speculation. Speculation, man" - if anything, aren't you the one failing to back up your argument?
If you knew as much about game development as I do, you would realize how erroneous and ignorant this statement is. I feel that even if I gave you a reasonable argument why Skyrim does borrow a lot from DA's theme (games borrowing from games is very, very commonplace in the industry), you would find a way to make it sound baseless. =/
Sometimes I facepalm.
Everything I will say now is from direct experience on video game development (however, I am no authority on the matter). Think about this: Bethesda has a stranglehold on the console ARGP (American Role-Playing Game) market with its newfound mainstream success due to Oblivion (and Fallout 3 to a lesser extent). It's in a very comfortable position, and is universally known in the biz as being very, very lazy. Oblivion sells 5.5 million copies since its release 6-7 years ago.
Now, in 2010, Dragon Age, the only big ARPG contender we've seen in a while, is released and quickly racks up around 3.7 (give or take 0.2 mill) million copies sold. 5.5 mil - 6 years. 3.7 mil - 1 year. And Bethesda is ****ing scared, man. Scared. Till DA, they have been the only big name in single-player ARPGs on consoles.
The video game industry is just as trendy as every other industry. There phases and fads. Right now, DA has proven ARPGs themed around big mythical creatures makes the mainstream go "Oooh!" and "Aaah!" - something that publishing and marketing teams will not fail to notice. And these people want a piece of the cash pie while it's warm. More and more companies are going to start entering the ARPG realm with their own contenders. And Bethesda knows this. They want to stay ahead of the curve. To keep their mainstream appeal. Which is why their game is based on these big mythical creatures as well. But I seriously doubt the actual development team wanted to implement the big snakes. If anything, the publishing team pressured them into doing it. That's the kind of influence they have.
My god Radek, you're argument that is ridiculous. Saying that Skyrim is ripping off of DA for including dragons, is like saying that Mario ripped off of Pitfall for including jumping. I mean, come on. They're f***ing DRAGONS. They are EVERYWHERE. You can't accredit them to one, fairly recent game. It's outrageous.
