The year is X43. It’s been nearly half a decade. since the impact. Since a small rock, not much bigger than your fist, struck our small planet outside of the capital city of Koyosai. Since then, some very special individuals were changed forever. At first the changes were small. A door shutting without anyone touching it. A light going out. A television channel changing without explanation. Soon after, however, the first of them discovered their Role. That’s the name we’d come to know their powers by. Estimates at the time suggested that there were nearly two hundred of these individuals, each with a wholly unique Role. Some could create fire. Others could manipulate gravity. Others could change the very light with which we see. The governments of the world immediately saw this as a chance to harness seemingly unlimited potential. So, they began experimenting. They quickly found that the catch seemed to be that the power of the individuals is only as powerful as their bond with their battle partner lacking a Role, known as Goei. Though the world of roles was quickly expanding, the world that we lived in was full of strife and war. Conflict was constant and brutal. People were in despair. The nations of the world needed to find a way out. It was in this way that the Idol program was developed. The Idol program was a government funded initiative that would find “gifted” individuals, or, as they would come to be called, Idols, at young ages, educate them, teach them to work and bond with their Goei, and train them to use their powers to aid their nation in war. Beyond just being weapons, however, they would also be icons. They would be the heroes of their countries. For these purposes, academies were founded all across the world. The most prestigious included those of Burali, Yukural, Svokoria, and Mavana. However, the greatest of them all was Koyosai Academy. On a remote island outside of the capital, it was the hub of the Idol program for the nations of Koyosai, Fukabe, Aninun, and Jianchai. Students would spend four years, from fourteen to eighteen, in the Academy. The academy also, however, educated Goei, promising students who were transferred to the Academy at age fourteen. Goei and Idols would be paired in their first years at the Academy, and would stay together until one was killed in combat or both were relieved. It was highly competitive, every student fighting (literally and figuratively) for the number one spot and the honor of being the first choice of the Sponsors. Sponsors, private corperations that financially and commercially support Idols and Goei following graduation from the Academy, would only pick the top of the class to support. Most who were not chosen fell into obscurity and were relegated to mundane tasks far from the front lines of conflict. Nine primary Sponsors were (and are) at the top.
Every four years, a new “wave” begins. Waves are simply a way of differentiating between Idol generations. Next year, in X44, Wave 6 begins. Applications are now open. Each of you will be paired with a Goei and begin your journey to fame and glory!
