Just banged out another 250 words or so of my in-progress story, "Now and Then." I really want to get this done before the end of the year, considering I've been working on it sporadically since early April. Luckily, I'm almost up to the final vignette; perhaps unluckily, it's going to be the longest vignette, probably by about twice as long as the others. But after that, there's a short scene of little consequence, so that should be easy to write.

Getting there! It's at about 3500 words so far.

Long ago, I made a vow to myself.

No matter the genre, I would do the best that I could in each.

Fanfiction, poetry, original fiction, screenplays, comedy, romance, mysteries, WHATEVER!!!

My imagination is my greatest treasure. I want to PROVE that I can tackle any genre. And I want to prove it to myself.

I love to write. It helps me vent, it helps me become calm, it just... helps me. I want to say thank you to everyone who's read my stories here, and none of you know how much it means to me that you take the time to check out my stuff.

Thanks, guys. I have a lot more to come, and I'm so very thankful I can post it all here.

The Creative Corner is the greatest part of ZU. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

Ugh, too much wine. Haha. To the writer's of ZU: you are amazing. You are all inspiring.

Fair use question: I'm considering quoting part of the first sentence of A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle in my latest short story, the context being that a protagonist is reading that book. Would I be required to get permission from the publisher for this, or can I cite fair use, according to U.S. copyright law?

You need permission! If you intend to quote a passage in a non-transformative way (you are) you need to ask permission first.

Hmm...you have a valid point there.

Pretty sure this is wrong... There are four relevant factors for determining fair use in the United States. From Title 17 of the United States Code:

the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
the nature of the copyrighted work;
the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

EzloSpirit has not mentioned whether or not his short story is to be used commercially, but either way, since a single sentence from a novel is not a significant portion and is extremely unlikely to have any effect whatsoever on the commercial viability of the quoted novel, I would be extremely surprised if any copyright violation would be considered to have occurred. You could always ask permission if you want to be excruciatingly safe, but it's almost certainly not necessary.
