Link’s 10 funniest moments in The Wind Waker

by on January 14, 2021

The Wind Waker is full of memorable moments. Its scenes of action, suspense, drama, and even brief horror have made it an engaging and beloved title for many fans. But as great as those scenes are to establish a grand fantasy epic, it is the game’s humorous moments that make it feel complete.

The humor in The Wind Waker is laugh-out-loud funny, and no other character brings the comedic effect into play as well as Link does. From his hilarious facial expressions to his often bizarre actions, Link finds a way to add a laugh to nearly every part of the game.

10. Winning an Auction

One of Link’s best traits is his expressiveness. He is always willing to show when he’s upset, scared, or angry. He’s also willing to show when he’s happy, especially when he’s happy because things are going his way.

This excitement is seen when Link takes part in the night Auction on Windfall Island. If he’s found plenty of rupees and upgrades for his wallet during his travels, he’ll have deep enough pockets to completely bewilder his competition with his bids. As they stand there stupefied, he can take a moment to do a quick victory dance.

9. Meeting the Queen of the Fairies

Despite his courage in the face of perils and monsters, Link shows an adorable level of nervousness in the face of romantic advances. It’s sometimes easy to forget that this person, who travels the world and slays giant beasts, is still just a kid.

He’s had only a few interactions with girls, so being nervous when a girl calls him cute is only natural. This is especially true if the girl in question happens to be an immortal ruler of the powerful, magical beings that have been helping him throughout his journey.

8. Receiving His Tunic

Receiving unwanted birthday gifts can almost be seen as a right of passage for children. The shame is when that gift is also part of some tradition. That’s the situation for Link here, and he needs to wear this warm and uncomfortable tradition all day long.

Link is never one to disappoint his Grandma, but he can’t help showing his dissatisfaction with the gift. There’s nothing fun about wearing the layers and the thick tunic in the tropical heat. But he’ll do it. He won’t smile while he’s doing it, but it’s for his Grandma, so he’ll put up with it for just one day.

7. Meeting The King of Red Lions

People do love to surprise and confuse Link whenever possible. They sneak up on him, attack him, and beg him for things on a regular basis. Random strangers do this the most, but so do his friends. And in this instance, it is a random stranger who, after the shock, becomes a friend.

Being fair to Link, he does take the surprise of meeting a talking boat much better than most people would. The boat, The King of Red Lions, has a somewhat ferocious face as well. So if anything, Link’s reaction is more of a testament to his bravery.

6. Waking Up

A full night’s sleep is something that many people need. It’s also something Link clearly didn’t get the night before his birthday. He can barely keep his eyes open while his sister congratulates him on his big day.

Those drooping eyes tell everyone all that they need to know about how Link feels right now. It’s his birthday, and the best gift he could receive right now are ten more minutes of sleep. But it’s his dear sister that’s woken him up. He has the rest of the day to relax after she’s done giving him her present. At least, that’s the plan.

5. Meeting The Great Deku Tree

Link is probably used to being surprised by this point, but this exchange has moved him more into the realm of utter bewilderment. He has met pirates, a talking boat, a giant bird, a giant dragon, and fought a giant bug. Now he is face-to-face with a talking tree.

Link cannot understand a single word it says. This wooden titan immediately starts into a full conversation in a bizarre dialect, but Link is not about to interrupt the jibberish. Luckily, the tree, called the Deku Tree, picks up on the child’s suppressed horror and begins speaking a common tongue. At least the tree is more sympathetic to Link’s confusion than most other beings are.

4. Facing Ganondorf

When Zelda, Ganondorf, and Link finally all converge on the top of Ganon’s Tower, the tension is incredible. Everything has been building to this scene. Ganondorf takes this moment to reflect on his life and to show his dedication to his obsession. It is an intense moment — and Link wants absolutely nothing to do with it.

Link’s face says it all. This old man is nuts, he’s always been nuts, and he needs to just go away once and for all. All Link wanted was to sleep in on his birthday and have some soup with his family. He’s not in the mood to listen to some megalomaniac’s self-pity.

3. Activating the Goddess Statues Pt. 1

Poor Link. He always does as asked of him and he always tries to help, yet life constantly gives him reasons to regret it. Everything he interacts with does seem to love to test his courage. And in this instance, the thing is also trying to see if he can fly.

He even got out of the way when the the statue started to behave like it was about to blow. Then it exploded the moment he thought everything was fine. There are few ways to interpret this other than that it waited for him to come back.

2. Activating the Goddess Statues Pt. 2

From explosion to collision, the trial that the gods have planned for Link begins before he can even enter this new dungeon that has risen from the depths. The Goddess Statues had faked him out, and as he soars through the sky, all he can do is pray that something will catch him.

Something, in a sense, does catch him. The unfortunate issue is that the thing is a massive stone wall. The poor kid hits the tower with a definite thud. And if that wasn’t enough, he then falls a few stories to the waters below. The dungeon is going to seem trivial after this special introduction to it.

1. Going for a Ride

A little warning would have been nice. Everything that had happened to Link up to this point was entirely the fault of Tetra and her pirates. He needed to leave his home and rescue his sister because of their recklessness. And now that it was time to infiltrate the enemy fortress to retrieve her, all the pirates can think to do is to make him into a human cannonball.

How they got him into the barrel without him noticing, no one really knows. It’s fairly impressive. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why Link stops struggling and accepts the ride he is about to go on. They got him good. All he can do is accept it and hold on tight.
