Dark Link: A character of reflection and triumph
Link is a protagonist who embodies many noble and inspirational qualities that make him a true hero. His dedication to the people of Hyrule, his kind nature, and his unwavering courage all combine into the silent hero Zelda fans have come to love. But these traits are not the only facets of Link’s personality, as he has much darker qualities lurking beneath his heroic exterior.
The hard truth about Link is that like all humans or, in this case, Hylians, he has the capacity for darkness. In fact, his capacity for darkness is so strong that in some games it manifests into a frightening doppelganger that Link must defeat in order to progress. Dark Link represents Link’s flaws and fears that can overtake him should his spirit waver.
Who or what is Dark Link?
Dark Link has made appearances in many games, usually as a mini-boss or main boss of a temple. His form is cast in shadow, ranging from a mere silhouette to a dark reflection of Link’s body. Most notable are his striking red eyes that bore into your very being. Often, his voice is the same as Link’s, yet warped into a distorted imitation that is enough to send shivers down your spine. Needless to say, his appearance alone makes Dark Link an intimidating foe.
When it comes to fighting Dark Link, he typically mirrors the attacks that Link has learned at that point, sometimes even knowing Link’s own strategies. Link cannot just swing his sword wildly and hope to win as he can against some enemies; he must have a calculated approach. Compared to most enemies, Dark Link is one of the more competent and proficient foes of the Zelda series simply because he reflects one of the most powerful characters.
It is unclear what Dark Link actually is since he has no dialogue just like the real Link. In some cases, he is very clearly created by magic, as is the case with Cia in Hyrule Warriors and Veran in Oracle of Ages. These Dark Links are simply illusions meant to mess with Link, with a clear point of origin and goal.

Ocarina of Time’s Dark Link is less obvious in his origin. As one of the most notable appearances of Dark Link, his mini-boss fight in the Water Temple is incredibly mysterious. His arena looks nothing like the rest of the temple as Link emerges into a vast field of water and fog. Dark Link appears out of thin air, becoming more palpable as Link gets closer. The only advice Navi can even offer is “conquer yourself!”
As time goes on in the fight, Dark Link grows opaquer and more aggressive, swapping from simply mirroring Link to trying to best him. It is unclear whether this Dark Link is the creation of Ganon, the Water Temple’s, or even Link’s own mind. Once Dark Link is defeated, the fog dissipates from the room, leaving only unanswered questions in an ordinary chamber.

Perhaps the most unnerving iteration of Dark Link is his appearance in Twilight Princess. Instead of actually fighting him, Dark Link is used to represent the Dark Interlopers in the story that the Light Spirit Lanayru tells about the war for the Triforce and the creation of the Fused Shadow. Lanayru uses images of Link and Dark Link in order to clearly convey the gravity of the Fused Shadow’s power and the darkness it can cause. Should Link falter at any moment, he could become a victim to the allure of the Fused Shadow and be ruled by its dark magic.

This cutscene is quite horrifying, even causing Link to fall on his knees from what appears to be distress. The images of Link and Dark Link are meant to show how capable of corruption Link is. They act as a warning against the use of the Fused Shadow, even going so far as to show normal Link replacing one of the Dark Links. Should Link be careless, he can be overtaken by the temptation of the Fused Shadow, causing his nightmares to become reality.
Link’s Flaws
Twilight Princess’ Dark Link shows one of the doppelganger’s primary purposes in the series: He is the representation of Link’s possible corruption. Link, like everyone else in the world, has flaws. In order to be a true hero, he must find ways to overcome them. It may seem like Link lacks flaws since he is a silent protagonist and controlled by the player, but the Zelda series does include notes on Link’s perceived personality.
The various Darks Link can tell stories about Link. For Twilight Princess, Dark Link shows that the item Link seeks can warp his pure-hearted beliefs. The quest for power is ultimately a quest that will never end, and such an insatiable hunger can turn people into monsters like Ganondorf. It is a harsh reminder that Link’s quest, while noble in his own mind, can be perceived as questionable by other characters in the story, such as the Light Spirits.

In Ocarina of Time, Dark Link is Link’s mirror image. He punishes hesitation as he grows more aggressive the longer Link keeps him alive. He attacks without courage, disappearing when getting attacked only to reappear behind Link for a cheap shot. Link has to outsmart his own strategy and learn his own weaknesses in combat through this mini-boss fight. It also shows that blind courage will not do, since recklessly attacking Dark Link will cause him to reflect the blow. Link must find the balance between strategy and courage in order to succeed and overcome his own shortcomings.
While not a canon example, the Dark Link fight in Hyrule Warriors is one of the most definitive examples of Link showing weakness. After gaining the Master Sword, Link blindly rushes into Cia’s stronghold. His companions are worried about how reckless he has become as he fights his way to Cia. Using Link’s arrogance, Cia summons Dark Link from Link’s shadow and forces them to fight.

Cia is able to use Link’s reckless behavior to get the better of him, and if it were not for the quick thinking from Lana and the rest of the group, Link would have been killed by his own darkness. Of course, Link is able to overcome this darkness and awaken the Master Sword, but he is distinctly shown as an imperfect character. He gives in to his own pride, and it nearly dooms him.
Overcoming Darkness
Dark Link is not a purely evil character. Yes, he represents everything bad about Link, but more importantly, he serves as a tool for reflection. He is a test that Link needs to accept and overcome in order to become a true hero. It is through Dark Link that the audience can learn more about their silent protagonist and truly bring depth to Link.
Everyone has their own darkness, manifesting in their flawed behavior and their weaknesses, but that darkness is not necessarily evil. It can be defeated, sometimes through an epic fantasy sword fight if you live in the world of Hyrule, but more often than not it is a commitment to change and determination that truly allows one to overpower the darkness in their hearts.

This is what makes characters interesting. It is exciting to see characters have flaws, especially for Link. Link is the connection between Hyrule and the player, and showing his flaws makes him all the more relatable for the audience. The concept of fighting the physical manifestation of yourself is scary at first, yet satisfying when you prevail.
This satisfaction carries through to the Dark Link encounters. The Dark Link fights provide a sense of catharsis. Link has flaws, but he can defeat them and, through his victory, ensure the players that they too can overcome their demons.
