A new look for a new era

by on November 11, 2020

If you are a regular reader of Zelda Universe, you may have noticed that the website looks a bit different today. After years of discussions, planning, and development, we have finally launched the first all-new Zelda Universe website design since 2008.

Our iconic Zelda temple website design has evolved over time, but the first version launched 12 years ago — a completely different era on the Internet.

The original Temple theme, circa 2008.

Older members of our community may remember that the temple design was a crowdfunded effort (before crowdfunding was a common term). Without the donations of the community, the design would not have existed at all, and that is one reason we have been hesitant to replace it. It’s time for the website to move forward, but those contributions from so long ago helped to build Zelda Universe into what it is today. We are eternally grateful.

I was not a member of the Zelda Universe team when the temple design was made, but I remember well the first time Jason, the owner of Zelda Universe, excitedly showed me the early proofs for the design. Back then, a website design rarely lasted a year; no one could have predicted it would last for more than a decade.

This is primarily a visual redesign, but some sections of the website have new features. The biggest new feature is the inclusion of both a dark mode and light mode for reading. We have more small updates in the works, so you can expect to see other tweaks made regularly.

We had planned to launch this change earlier in the year, but the pandemic caused many development delays, as our team was, understandably, focused on other priorities. It has all worked out for the best, as we can now begin this new era with you just before the launch of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Thank you for your continued support. Here’s to another great 12 years.
