Meet the Mad Batter
Mad Batter is an odd bat-like demon who naps underground. If you awaken him from his nap, he thanks you and then “curses” you by forcing you to carry more stuff. He’s quite the evil fellow.
Mad Batter has three altars across Koholint Island. When you find his altar, use Magic Powder on the altar to awaken Mad Batter. You can meet Mad Batter at each location one time.
Mad Batter will increase the total amount of Magic Powder, Bombs, and Arrows that you can carry. He only increases the total amount of one item each time you visit, so visit all three lairs to maximize your inventory.
- Magic Powder: Increase from 20 to 40
- Bombs: Increase from 20 to 60
- Arrows: Increase from 20 to 60
You can choose which “curse” you receive
Before cursing you, Mad Batter will tell you what item he is burdening you with carrying, and then he will politely ask if you are ready before casting his spell.
If you tell Mad Batter you are not ready, he will change the item that you receive. You can cycle through all three and choose the one you want! This is very helpful because the default option is Magic Powder for the first visit, but Magic Powder is the least useful upgrade!

First Upgrade: Mysterious Forest
Power Bracelet Required

Mad Batter’s first altar is hidden in the Mysterious Forest; you will have passed it several times without realizing! Near the center of the forest, just north of the tunnel that leads to the Toadstool, there is an area with a lone Sword Moblin. The same area also has a single boulder.
Lift the boulder to reveal the entrance to Mad Batter’s altar.
This upgrade is available significantly earlier in the game than the other two. We recommend upgrading the Bombs first; you will use them far more than both the Magic Powder and Arrows.
Second Upgrade: Martha’s Bay
Flippers Required
There is a suspicious staircase surrounded by bushes and pits near the southwest corner of Martha’s Bay. Use the Pegasus Boots and Roc’s Feather together to cross the pits and enter the underground tunnel.

Enter and swim through the underground tunnel.
You will emerge in a secluded area that leads to the altar.
The tunnel is flooded. Swim through the tunnel to emerge in a secluded area surrounded by trees that is just northwest of where you started. Walk to the west side of the path to find another staircase that leads to Mad Batter’s altar.
Third Upgrade: Tal Tal Mountain Range
Hookshot Required
The final upgrade is hidden deep within the Tal Tal Mountain Range and requires significantly more effort than the others. It is hidden on the path to Turtle Rock.
First, travel to the Hen House at the top of the mountain range. Use the Hookshot to cross the broken bridges west of the Hen House. On the other side, cut down the lone bush to reveal a mountain tunnel.

Lift the rock at the top of the mountain to find Mad Batter’s altar.
Follow the path west. At the end of the path, jump down to a lower level and enter another staircase leading deeper into the mountain. In the next area, use the Hookshot to cross a large pit to find the exit.
Outside, follow the path up the mountain. You will have to dodge falling boulders as you ascend. When you reach the top of the mountain, walk to the west to find a treasure chest.
There is a lone boulder just south of the treasure chest. Lift the boulder to find the entrance to Mad Batter’s final altar.
