Smash director Masahiro Sakurai is still pumping out those reveals. This week’s round of “pic of the day”s continue to show off brand new aspects of the upcoming fighter for 3DS and Wii U, with a new trophy type, a new weapon and perhaps most excitingly, a new stage.
Sakurai has now confirmed a new type of trophy to collect in Super Smash Bros. 4. Our first screenshot shows a shrunk-down trophy of Tortimer Island, showing us the first example of stage-based trophies. It’ll be fun to eventually see a miniaturised version of Skyloft.
“Some stages have been shrunk down and made into trophies, like this one of Tortimer Island for the 3DS version. I wish I could have a figurine like this in real life.”
Next up, we have an interesting new item flying into the latest brawlers: a boomerang. Interestingly, it doesn’t appear to be based on boomerangs from the recent Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, or even Zelda; just a general Smash item. Looks like Link won’t necessarily be the only fighter to wield a rebounding weapon.
“Here’s a new item that we’ve thrown in–the boomerang. As you’d guess, it’ll fly back into your hands after you throw it, and if you keep catching it, its attack power grows with each throw! However, opponents can nab the boomerang out of the air, so it might be an easier item to use in Smash Run.”
Ike made his triumphant return to the Smash series recently, and he’s bringing a new stage with him. The Coliseum is a Fire Emblem-themed stage that appears to take inspiration from the original game.
“We’ve added a familiar setting from the Fire Emblem series, the Coliseum. In the original game, this place is filled with both hope and despair. There is machinery in the ground that activates variable platforms.”
