We’ve had a lot of Nintendo-related birthdays lately. First Shigeru Miyamoto turned 60, last week Satoru Iwata turned 53 and today, Wind Waker Link turns 10! That’s right, today marks the 10th anniversary of Wind Waker‘s Japanese release. Has a decade really passed already?
The game marked Zelda’s debut into the incredible cel-shaded visual style. Thanks to this graphical direction, the game still looks just as stunning today as it did back in 2002. It divided fans upon release, with many disregarding the game because the graphics were such a radical departure from Ocarina and Majora’s Mask before it. Which is a shame, because to this day I struggle to think of a game that’s as beautiful.
It’s my personal favourite Zelda game, and possibly my favourite video game of all time. After 16 years of gaming, that’s not a statement I take lightly. If it’s been a while since you played the game or you missed out on it entirely, perhaps now is the perfect time to dig out that GameCube controller. Have any precious memories of playing The Wind Waker? Sound off in the comments – we wanna hear them!
