Chapter 5: Kanalet Castle

5.1Return BowWow to MeowMeow

You’ll reappear right outside Bottle Grotto, and it’s time to take BowWow home. But first, if you want to get a quick boost of Rupees to your wallet, re-enter Bottle Grotto. Now that you have the Power Bracelet, you can access the treasure chest that’s surrounded by pots. Inside are 50 Rupees, which is a nice addition towards an imminent purchase.

Exit the dungeon again and then wait for BowWow to clear a path for you through the Goponga Flowers. Once you have a clear path, get out of the Flower trap. Then you should continue southward. After two screens, you’ll be at the edge of the forest by the now-familiar cross-shaped island where you found a Piece of Heart. Hop onto the island and, once again, head west into the Mysterious Forest.

Secret Seashell, Piece of Heart, and upgrade
While in the Mysterious Forest, it’s possible to get your second Secret Seashell. You can also acquire your fourth Piece of Heart, which will grant you an extra heart of life going forward. Finally, you can also get the first equipment upgrade, which will double your Magic Powder.

The path through the forest should be remarkably familiar by now. Head west two more screens to reach the treasure chest with the Tail Key. Then go south three screens. Finally, jog quickly to the west and then continue south until you’re out of the woods.

“I really appreciate what you did for my poor, precious BowWow! … How can I ever repay you? I know… SMOOOOOOOCH!

Madam MeowMeow’s house isn’t far from here. It’s simply one more screen south and then one more east. To return BowWow to her, all you need to do is enter her house, and BowWow will magically reattach himself to the stake out front. MeowMeow does have a reward for you, but it’s of no real monetary or utilitarian significance, but you’re still lucky nonetheless. Once you’re done, head outside.

 

5.2 Buy the Shovel and some Bombs

Hopefully by this point you’ve achieved a good piggy bank of Rupees. Specifically, you’re going to need 210 Rupees by this point to proceed as you have to make two big purchases that will help you reach the next dungeon. Those purchases are the Shovel (200 Rupees) and Bombs (10 Rupees).

At this point, provided you’ve visited the Photographer near Moblin Hideout, you can now get Photographs #5, #6, and #7 added to your album. Don’t worry about #2 through #4; the photographs unlock out of order.

The general store is on the east side of Mabe Village. Head east and pass Marin and Tarin’s House until you reach the bush field. Then head one screen north to reach the general store. Inside, you’ll want to purchase both the Shovel and the Bombs, provided you can afford them of course.

Once you’ve purchased the Shovel and the Bombs, you can then get both the third and fourth Secret Seashells on the island.

5.3 Clear away the giant stone

Now that you’ve stocked up on some new items, it’s time to boldly venture out into central Koholint. The lack of a Power Bracelet limited your capability to head eastward before now, but now you can. Head east from the shop, lifting the boulders out of the way.

If you head east one more screen, you will see a Flying Octorok resting next to a small pillar that flashing. This is the first of four Warp Holes around Koholint. Simply jump into one, and it will take you flying to the next one in sequence that has been activated. So if you jump in this one, it will send you… immediately back to the same one since you haven’t activated any others. Simply seeing a Warp Hole on screen will activate it, so you need do nothing else. Continue heading east.

You’ll start to see small holes in the ground; within some of these holes are Pincers, worm-like creatures that will peek out and extend their long necks at you whenever you walk past them. You’ll get a small warning of eyeballs peering out from the pit. Give yourself a bit of distance when you see them, and then hit them when they fully extend.

Continue north and then east past the Pincer pits, and then finally head south. You’ll see a giant rock formation that looks to be something resembling the face of an animal, a pig perhaps? At any rate, this stone is clearly in the way and needs clearing out, especially as there’s a nice convenient path that runs up the staircase further eastward.

You don’t technically have to clear away this stone boulder, but it is really helpful in the long run. Set a Bomb down by the boulder, and the resultant explosion will clear away the rock.

5.4 Make a deal with Richard

Once you’ve blown up the rock, it’s actually time to turn around and head back. You could get to your next destination going forward, but that really is the long way. So head north, west, and south again to jog around the tree line. Then continue heading west until you reach the Warp Hole again.

Once you reach the Warp Hole, continue south. There won’t be any enemies on many of the screens that follow, so you’re really just following the path as far as it leads. After heading south again, you’ll see what appears to be a dungeon, and, yes, this is Level 3, the next dungeon. However, there’s a key you need, and you’re about to talk to the guy who has that key.

Continue south, quickly jog east, and then head south one more time to reach a small villa with a rather large and overgrown backyard. Enter this humble estate, and you will meet Richard. Richard apparently has a rather sophisticated air. He used to live in the castle to the northeast, but after something happened to his guards, he was forced to flee. And one of his most prized possessions just happens to be left there.

“So, you want the key to Ukuku Prairie, do you? I may be able to help you… Let’s make… a deal, shall we?”

If you agree to fetch his belongings, he will clarify that there are five somethings that he requires. Those somethings are Gold Leaves, and they are all within Kanalet Castle’s boundaries. Given that he has the key to the next dungeon, your hands are tied; agree to help out and then leave his presence to find the Leaves.

Secret Seashells
At this juncture, you now are able to get Secret Seashells #5 through #12. Note that Seashell #6 and #11 are time-sensitive. This means they can only be acquired at certain times; in these cases, you can only obtain them as the sixth and eleventh Seashells. There are more Seashells in the game than you need to complete the quest, so you don’t need to get them; however, every Seashell you get saves later headaches.

5.5 Invade Kanalet Castle

From Richard’s Villa, you’ll need to travel east one screen and north one screen and then north three screens to arrive at the entrance to the lake that guards access to the Key Cavern. To reach the front entrance to Kanalet Castle, head east one screen, north two screens, east once more, and then finally north one screen. The front gate is blocked, but thankfully there’s another way in.

When you arrive at the front gate of Kanalet Castle, you will receive Photograph #10. However, this photograph is time-sensitive. Inside Kanalet Castle is a switch that opens the castle gate. If you press this switch before getting this photograph, the photograph will be lost.

The secret entrance to the castle is two screens to the east. However, in order to get inside, you will need to have completed the Trading Sequence up until the Bananas.

On the southern bank of the castle moat, you will find Kiki the Monkey waiting there. If you have the Bananas, he will offer to do you a favor. Give them, and he will call his monkey friends to build you a bridge over the strait, allowing you to proceed north.

“Bananas! Bananas! Oooh! Oooh! Give to Kiki?”

Cross the bridge and continue heading north.

Trading Sequence
As a result of this trade, the monkeys will leave a Stick behind. You have no choice but to pick it up as you walk along the bridge, but this item will continue the trading sequence. You can then use this Stick to trade up to the Honeycomb.

Once you reach the telephone booth on the outskirts of the castle, head west one screen. You’ll see a rather suspicious bush on this screen. Mow it down with your sword to find a secret passage that heads beneath the walls of the castle. The secret passage isn’t that treacherous, but it will require the use of Roc’s Feather to stomp the Goomba and jump over a few spike-laden pits. Head up once you reach the other side to enter Kanalet Castle.

5.6 Find the five Gold Leaves

And now you’ll need to proceed with your objective to obtain the five Gold Leaves. Two of them are outside of the castle while the remaining three are inside Kanalet. However, some of them can be rather tricky, especially since several are being guarded by very unique enemies or by new mechanics.

Step One To the west of the castle is the Mad Bomber, who will appear from the holes in the ground and throw Bombs at you. Stand in the middle of three of the holes and attack whenever he appears near you to get the first Leaf.

Step Two On the western side of the castle is this Darknut with a sword as well as a Crow. The Crow, surprisingly, is the enemy holding the Leaf, but it won't just swoop you like normal. Instead, you'll need to provoke it by tossing one of the rocks at it.

Step Three Head to the south of the castle so you can go inside. One screen west you'll find this room containing two Darknuts, a red Zol, and an Anti-fairy. The Anti-fairy can be defeated with Magic Powder, but you'll need to defeat the Darknut on the left for the third Gold Leaf.

Step Four Two rooms further in, you'll discover a switch inside the castle. It will make a noise but have no immediate effect. It's actually opening up the front gate of the castle to allow you to escape more easily.

Step Five Once you go upstairs, place a Bomb in front of the relief on the left-hand side. A Darknut will emerge from the wall. Kill it to obtain Gold Leaf #4.

Step Six After you exit and re-enter the dungeon, you'll find this sealed door. Thankfully, a thrown pot will be all you need to open it up.

Step Seven The last Gold Leaf is in the possession of this Ball and Chain Soldier. Equip your sword and shield so that you can block its attacks while attacking him while he's winding up. Avoid the sides of the room so you don't get caught under the crumbling floor. After several hits, the last of the Leaves will be yours!

5.7 Return the leaves to Richard

Now you’ll need to head back all the way to Richard. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way out of the castle; you’ll have to backtrack to the entrance. Head outside, back in the west entrance, head downstairs, and then avoid the Darknuts to get there. Once at the front entrance, you can simply walk south to cross over the moat back into Ukuku Prairie.

To reach Richard’s Villa from the front gate, you’ll need to head south once, west once, south twice, west once more, south three times, and then finally west one last time. Head inside and talk to the former ruler. He’ll be overjoyed to have his Leaves back, and in return he’ll give you access to his secret passage into the field. Just push the crate he was guarding right one square to access it.

5.8 Unbury the Slime Key

A few green Zols will be waiting for you as you traverse this narrow earthen corridor into the field behind Richard’s Villa. But seeing as how Zols are pushovers, you’ll have no trouble at all reaching the stairs leading upwards. The upper floor of the cavern is pretty empty; just head west and then out to access Pothole Field.

Secret Seashell
The 13th Secret Seashell can be found within this cave. It’s actually hard to miss, and it’s relatively easy to obtain while you’re passing through.

And this field is called Pothole Field for a very good reason; around half of the bushes in this field secretly hide potholes underneath them! The potholes actually create a rather mazelike pathway that leads from the cavern entrance to the Slime Key. There are a few different strategies you can use to get there.

  • Use the sword and Roc’s Feather. Just because the potholes form a maze doesn’t mean you can’t just easily jump over the walls! You’ll just have to make sure that you clear the bush on the other side of the pothole… and hope that there’s not a second pothole on the other side! However, do note that you can’t jump over potholes at the edge of the screen, and every bush at the edge of the screen is a pothole.
  • Use the sword to clear out the bushes. This is probably the most common method.
  • Use the Power Bracelet. Funnily enough, if a bush hides a pothole, you won’t be able to lift it. But you can safely lift the bushes that don’t. So by using this technique, you need never expose a single pothole as you navigate the maze.

Provided you don’t cheat and jump over the walls, the zigzagged path to the Slime Key is as follows:

Step Five You'll arrive at a curious looking bush in front of an owl statue. Mow down the bush and then use the Shovel to dig in the exposed soil. You'll uncover the Slime Key that will open up the next dungeon!
