Go ahead and throw in your shield; you’ll be rewarded for your carelessness.

There are two ways to get the Level-2 version of Link’s shield.

The first way is the exact same way that you get the Magical Boomerang. Just outside of Zora’s Waterfall is the Waterfall of Wishing. Once you obtain the Zora’s Flippers, you can swim through the deep, dark-colored water. As you exit the Zora’s domain, you’ll see a waterfall at the top of the screen just to the left. Swim up to the waterfall, and you’ll find a secret entrance.

When you’re asked if you want to throw something into the pool, select your Fighter’s Shield. When the great fairy asks you if you dropped it, say yes. She’ll give you the upgraded version of the shield.

With the Red Shield, you’ll be able to block small blasts of fire that enemies hurl at you. It won’t be able to block everything, however. Larger blasts will still go straight through the shield; you’ll need the Mirror Shield for those. But at least it’s a definite improvement.

Honesty is the best policy. Weirdly enough, the fairy will reward you for making her do work.

An expensive purchase

However, there is an alternate methodology to getting the Red Shield, but this is a far less desirable way to get it as it will cost you a good portion of your wallet. In the Dark World, on the west side of the moat surrounding the Pyramid of Power, you can find a rather isolated shop nestled amongst a small forest. You can jump over the fence to reach it. Once you get in, you can buy the Red Shield for 500 Rupees.
