After a few rumours and subsequent denials from Nintendo, The Big N has now finally confirmed that production for the Wii U has been terminated.

A post on the company’s Japanese website, subsequently translated by Kotaku, stated that production would be ending soon ‘within Japan’, but Nintendo of America further clarified in a statement to IGN that all Wii Us scheduled to go on sale in the North American market had already been shipped.

It hasn’t always been plain sailing for Nintendo’s current gen system. Selling a little under 14 million units worldwide, it struggled to match the heights of it’s 100 million selling predecessor. Lack of third party support and confused marketing at launch hindered the system, but it has nevertheless been home to some of the finest moments on a Nintendo console in recent years. From the beautiful Mario Kart 8 to new hit IP Splatoon, not to mention two HD Zelda remakes for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, there’s been some sublime software on the system.

It will of course be getting one last hurrah in the shape of Breath of the Wild when the game finally launches next year, but what have been your favourite moments on Wii U? Let us know in the comments below!

Xenoblade Chronicles X is an awesome game, just like its predecessor on the Wii, and Breath of the Wild will end the Wii U’s epic list of adventure games next year. the Mario games have reached their pique on this console, so it had a good run over all.
