When the original trailer for Breath of the Wild debuted at E3 2014, the internet caught fire with speculation that the newest incarnation of the hero of Hyrule would be female. With the addition of Linkle in Hyrule Warriors, and the rumours of being able to decide Link’s gender circulating prior to E3 2016, hype for such a change was at an all time high.

However, it has now been confirmed that Link, will in fact be male.

According to Eiji Aonuma, even though Nintendo did toy with the idea of a female Link, they “decided that if [they] were going to have a female protagonist, it’s simpler to have princess Zelda as the main character.” This would have been an interesting twist in the Zelda franchise, as the titular princess has never been the main protagonist of a canon game. Though there are problems with this concept, as Aonuma goes on to say “if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?”

With preserving the balance of the Triforce in mind, Breath of the Wild’s creators felt it was best to keep Link male.

God bless im so happy I prefer Link to stay male and Linkle turn out better in the sense she is not a Link i dont mind seen her as a side character in a future games

  • Valwin Mediaz

There never was Hype for a female Link instead people were pretty strongly against breaking the lore

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Around 90% of people were against it. Only that people tend to think when someone says the opposite of the majority they see it AS the majority.

      • David K.

75% of people disagree with your post. See, its easy to make up meaningless statistics.

All we know is that some people were in favor, some people were against, and some people didn’t care. Don’t assert facts that you can’t prove.

        • NintendoPSXTheSecond

It’s not “some”. A lot of people were against it.

lol, really? What is Link going to do? You could, I don’t know, think of something for him to do? You’re the writers, the entire breadth of your imagination is available to you. If you can break lore to give Ganondorf the Triforce of Power in Twilight Princess, you can make playable Princess Zelda happen.

That being said, while I’m disappointed we won’t have the option to choose Link’s gender and apparently will never have a Zelda game where you get to play as Princess Zelda, I’m happy this question has finally been answered for us. The debates on this have been so ugly for the past year or so. The fandom hit peak embarrassing with the shit-slinging that was going on. I’m ready to move on already.

    • Valwin Mediaz

the Zelda thing can still happen im sure they can come up with something Playable Zelda is way better that FemLink

      • amanda_87

But he said he just CAN’T think of what Link is going to do if Zelda is the main character. JUST CAN’T IMAGINE… ANYTHING……..

It’s so dumb. I wish he’d just said “no” and not given us such a stupid reason. So yeah, I hope he changes his mind one day, playable Zelda is something people have loved to see for a long time.

        • don mario

because it wouldn’t fit. link is the main character, it wouldn’t be the same game if zelda was the main character. its quite a basic point. if they made a zelda game with zelda as the main character it would be a spin off game.

The reason itself seems a little off(I mean, both Zelda and link could fight alongside…they already have for crying out loud), but I’m glad the matter is pretty much settled for now(he would rather Make a Zelda as the protagonist game than a female Link. That says a lot)

    • Valwin Mediaz

it really says a lot i hope they do give Zelda her own game they dont even need to feature link in it

  • Oscar Yasser Garcia Juallek

i mean, even if it may come across as somewhat mean spirited, a lot of the speculation(SPECIALLY that bit about the hooded VS hoodless Link artwork) could be summarized on this:

  • Linkle

Thank the heavens above! Looks like the creators didn’t buy into the false hype and kept up our beautiful tradition with male Link forever!

    Love you, Anouma! Love you!

  • TimeFlashes

That was a silly explaination. They could have easily let you choose the genders of the protagonist and the character to be rescued if they want to keep the same simple plot we have seen over and over again. That way, no matter if you are male or female, gay or straight, you can connect easier with the story. Besides, it would help to end that sexist damsel in distress thing.

It smells like they leaked the whole female link story to study the reaction and act in consequence. But anyway, that’s what happens when profit is the only thing that matters (most of the cases for private companies).

    • Oscar Yasser Garcia Juallek

…are you even a Zelda fan? Do you even play the series? Because there’s story related reasons why Zelda is always female, and even arguably Link always male.

      • TimeFlashes

I have played OoT, TWW, TP and SS. I think I played MM as a kid and watched my brother while he was playing it. I don’t remember any reason why Zelda has to be female and Link has to be male, what are those reasons you are talking about?

        • Oscar Yasser Garcia Juallek

You played SS and you don’t know!? SHE’S THE REINCARNATION OF A GODDESS. Even more so, there’s the fact as such the inherent light powers of the bloodline only surface in the maidens of the Royal Family, or the fact the entire lineage of the Royal Family has passed down the tradition of naming such maidens Zelda after the tragedy in Zelda II.
Same with Link, who is more than just a lineage and somewhat of a textbook reincarnation(I know about hinduism’s take in reincarnation, but no reincarnation or legacy in the Zelda series has ever changed the gender. Not even in non-Triforce bound characters like Impa. The same way there’s no reason to assume reincarnation can’t do it…there isn’t either to say it can, since evidence actually would suggest otherwise).

          • TimeFlashes

“The same way there’s no reason to assume reincarnation can’t do it…there isn’t either to say it can” The logic approach to this is they can change the genders if they want, the plot wouldn’t be bad or inconsistent if they did it. Moreover, Zelda’s part being played by a boy would be an interesting surprise for the characters, and the same for a female Link.

But again, I don’t think they took that decision based on lore, they just thought about the public’s reaction.

          • don mario

it wouldn’t be interesting. it would appeal to some warped people who think they get to decide what nintendo put in their games just because they say so(they don’t)

    • don mario

they didn’t leak a female story, it was bullshit. the linkle thing added fire to the flames but it was something that largely came out of nothing.

in the original trailer link had a different design to the usual green tunic so people started speculating that he was a different character and was female. even though he looked the same as he has done for a while now, minus the green tunic. its just utter nonsense and its good that its finally been put to bed.

  • HarukoV

Meh, I’ll just be happy with minimal male pronouns since I always give the hero my name anyway. I honestly would be happy if there was an option to just change words like ‘boy’ to ‘girl; and ‘he’ to ‘she’, but since I’ve always made-believe that’s the case it’s no big deal that such options are absent.
