During Nintendo’s latest Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Direct stream, they revealed 50 unique features exclusive to the Wii U version of the title, such as “8-Player Smash” and new exclusive stages. One of these reveals is a returning mode named “Masterpieces,” which will be found in the “Vault” menu of the game.

It is a rather unique game mode that highlights the origins behind each playable fighter. The player will be able to experience small, “cut-down” demos of the older games that made them popular. The levels are timed, and some may have pre-installed save data. This mode was available in the previous installment, Brawl; however, this time the range of games is much larger, and the time limit on each Masterpiece appears much more generous than the short 30-second snippets offered before. Of course, The Legend of Zelda is again included in the retro line-up, among many others.

If the player enjoys the small sample of the title, he or she will have the option to then go to the eShop and purchase the Virtual Console game easily. Have a look in the video below, around the 24-minute mark.

This could be an effective way to boost sales on the eShop, and at the very least, could teach younger gamers a little video game history. I mean, who wouldn’t want to make sure younger gamers had a chance to play the original Legend of Zelda to better understand Link in Smash Bros.?

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U releases on November 21, so make sure to order your copy today!
