During the Super Smash Bros. roundtable, series director Masahiro Sakurai went into a little bit more depth about the move customization option in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. The purpose of customization is not adding equipment to challengers to make them more powerful, but to adjust the fighting style to suit each individual player. While in previous Smash titles each character had four special attacks, now each fighter has 12 possible attacks with three moves available for each direction. While customization is not available in the “With Anyone” online mode, it will be available in the “Friends Only” mode for game balance purposes.

One of the examples shown on-screen was the different moves for Mario. His moveset is as follows.

Standard Special Attack:

  • Fireball
  • Fast Fireball
  • Fire Orb

Up Special Attack:

  • Super Jump Punch
  • Super Jump
  • Explosive Punch

Side Special Attack:

  • Cape
  • Shocking Cape
  • Gust Cape

Down Special Attack:

  • F.L.U.D.D.
  • Scaling F.L.U.D.D.
  • High-Pressure F.L.U.D.D.

This not only gives players a ton of different options for a custom moveset, but allows players to create a moveset to best suit their own personal playing style, something that has never been done in a Smash game before. It will be interesting to see how this affects the game’s balance and to see all of the different move possibilities for each playable character! I wonder what kind of additional moves Link, Zelda, Sheik, and Toon Link will have?
