Eiji Aonuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda series, took to Miiverse today to confirm that the footage shown in the Zelda Wii U trailer was in fact gameplay footage. He stated that many members of the media had been asking him if it was pre-rendered footage or not, and Aonuma confirmed today that no, it is in fact gameplay footage.

“…but that really is actual gameplay on Wii U.”

Many people from the media kept asking me if the footage from the new Zelda game for Wii U is just a promotional movie, but that really is actual gameplay on Wii U.”

This confirms what Kotaku previously learned from a Nintendo PR rep shortly after the trailer’s unveil.

Aonuma also said that he was not joking when he mentioned that you will be able to reach the mountains found deep in the trailer’s background if you so choose to. The world in Zelda for Wii U seems to be massive, and we’ve only seen a small glimpse of it in a tiny trailer. Hopefully we see more of the vastness of this new Zelda world soon!

Is that Death Mountain in the background? A volcano?

    • NasiDe

There’s a volcano way back there, some goats (they have returned) with a herder, a house over to the left with more people, a well near another building.. Not sure what else.

  • veeronic

a little to the right from the center towards the mountain range in the distance is a structure that could be hyrule castle, need a larger picture to see it though.

    • Ryan Haney

I hadn’t noticed the castle until I read your post. The things I noticed were more farmers or herders, ruins of an old house, a village with a Deku-like tree and a well, an area with a cliff like where you had to run from a big Peahat spewing little Peahats in OOT, a treehouse-like structure like something the Wookiees would have built on Kashyyyk in Ep 3, and a lake with the sun glinting off it.

  • Corey

Link looks really weird in it but other than that I couldn’t possibly be more pumped over this! Its soo massive! (Thats what she said) this seems like itll be a grand slam in yhe series

  • Ibroman98

Did anyone notice that the monster was missing a leg? Maybe link fought but didn’t finish it off so it came looking for him. That would be a cool mechanic.

  • Me

    I’m so excited for this.

I don’t know why some people are doubting the art style of this game. I know a lot of people want a realistic and darker looking Zelda game, but this just looks beautiful! The Wind Waker’s art style on the GameCube and especially on the Wii U looks like a beautiful cartoon, but this game’s looking like a gorgeous painting in motion. I can’t wait to see more of it in the future!

By the way, I really don’t understand why some people dislike Link’s appearance in this game. It’s not like he’s always looked exactly the same in every single one of his games. He almost always looks different in some way and it’s not like his design’s as huge and drastic of a change as it was when “Toon Link” was introduced into the mix. I actually think he looks pretty cool.

  • Trinosaur

I’m so excited for this game. Ahhhh!

  • Daniel Rasmussen

I was originally hoping for a darker, more realistic Zelda game but after seeing this, my opinion changed! I love how this looks!

    • Tygr300

same here, before the e3 i was like “nintendo don’t give me another cel shaded zelda or i will flip my s**t” but when i saw the first frame my chin was on the floor…

  • Nathanael Noll

I wonder what timeline it takes place in probably the one with Twilight Princess in it (The child timeline?)

  • CEObrainz

I know we have Hyrule Warriors for what I’m about to say, but it would be cool to find encampments of Knights in the over-world, maybe some where sent on missions by the royal family and others are on patrol duty. Depending on the story and setting Link may have to act differently upon coming into contact with the groups.
