“Ike, the swordsman of magnificent strength, joins the battle!!”

Ike has been a fan favorite in the Super Smash Bros. series since he was unveiled in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Masahiro Sakurai has revealed on Miiverse that he is to return in Super Smash Bros. 4 with his iconic and very powerful Smash Attacks.

“Ike, the swordsman of magnificent strength, joins the battle!! Strike your foes down with his powerful smash attacks.”

Sakurai also reassures players about the usage of Ike:

“For this game, Ike’s design is based on the hero that appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. His sword deals heavy damage in Smash Bros., so this design suits him very well!”

“His sword deals heavy damage in Smash Bros., so this design suits him very well! Rest assured, he can use Aether as well.”

Who else would you like to see return from Brawl and be playable in Super Smash Bros. 4?

  • JaidynReiman

“Rest assured, he can use Aether as well.” Any reason why he specifically mentioned that? I almost thinking he’s teasing at Chrom and hinting Chrom might not be in (which frankly would be a stupid choice considering how Chrom really would be a cross between Ike and Marth, not all that different unless he took some serious liberties and gave Chrom a lance, which isn’t likely; Ike and Chrom’s Aether is different, but Chrom’s Aether is just Ike’s Quick Draw).

Dunno. I just really hope they removed Eruption in favor of Shockwave. Eruption is really the only odd thing in Ike’s moveset which was probably thrown in to appeal to Roy fans. It’d also be cool if Ike could use an axe in some way.

    • CEObrainz

Eruption is a pretty good move imo, it can edge guard opponents and isn’t very predictable either.

I would hope for three Fire Emblem Reps, hopefully with skins of other characters in place…although that’s probably a bit optimistic of me…

      • JaidynReiman

I still think giving him a shockwave projectile would be better than Eruption. If they add a mage character they can give Eruption to that character instead; its basically just Bolganone anyway (the Eruption itself resembles the fire spell Bolganone from what I’ve heard, so at least its a slight nod to FE even though it doesn’t fit Ike).

        • CEObrainz

Ahh yeah, the move itself doesn’t fit the rest of Ike’s moveset. Giving Ike a projectile however…..unless it’s a crappy one that may be too exploitable for Ike mains.

          • JaidynReiman

It doesn’t need to be that powerful. And please don’t try arguing that Ike is OP; Ike is actually quite low on the tier lists (granted he’s not as low as some characters). A projectile attack for him could help balance him out a bit. It doesn’t need to be that powerful and it’d fit with his original moveset.

One thing that constantly bugs me is how people keep suggesting Ike has some connection to fire, and the only reason is because he has that “Eruption” attack. Which again, was probably just added to please Roy fans due to Roy being cut. It and Counter (which every FE character has) are the only things that remotely resemble Roy.

          • CEObrainz

No I’m not saying Ike is OP, Marth is borderline OP at times but still not that bad. When you suggest a projectile I imagine something like Wolf’s gun from Brawl, which if given to Marth is overkill and if given to Ike would need some serous balancing to fit right.

This comes from my experience maining the two characters, so I can tell that Ike isn’t as bad as his placing in the tier list suggests.

But…..now that I think about it, Marth should never be given a projectile for the sake of everyone else…lol.

          • JaidynReiman

I think that Ike could benefit because of his slow moveset, but as his regular attacks are very strong, his projectile shouldn’t be that damaging. Perhaps his projectile would work in that it deals next-to-no knockback (except on high percentage) but deals a decent amount of damage.

Marth definitely doesn’t need a projectile, though. He’s quite fast and agile. I tend to main Marth, not because he’s OP but because I like to play as him. Ike I had a lot of fun picking up once and a while in Brawl, and if he’s improved I might play as him more.

Ike basically replaced Ganondorf as my “once-and-a-while” character (basically right behind my mains). If they can improve Ganondorf significantly (preferably with an almost entirely new moveset) I’d probably play as him more, but they destroyed him in Brawl.

          • CEObrainz

I would like Ike to have less end-lag on moves and reduced damage to slightly off-set this. They could then make his second jump higher and then we’d have a better character already, even if he didn’t have Eruption (replaced with nothing).

Ganondorf is fun to play, simply because it’s satisfying to KO with him.

          • JaidynReiman

I played Ganondorf in Brawl rarely, mainly because I liked him in Melee somewhat.

For Ike’s Aether, one way I can see to improve it a bit is allowing you to direct in what direction he throws the sword and how far. I think you could affect it only barely in Brawl, it’d be neat to be able to lean it further forward or behind. Granted I haven’t played Brawl in a while so I can’t recall exactly how much, if any control you had over it.

          • CEObrainz

Well you did have slight control over what direction you threw the sword facing, but horizontal movement was horrible anyway. Being able to throw the sword only a certain height would be cool, kinda like how Link’s spin attack works.

    • Elemonator

Just to throw this out there, but in the actual FE games, Ike’s sword, Ragnell, does have a projectile as it can hit two spaces away. So in that since it would indeed fit in better than eruption. Also since I saw you say something about him being related to fire, if memory serves his affinity is actually earth.

      • JaidynReiman

Ike’s affinity is earth, although I was slightly off on Ike. He is known as the “Hero of Blue Flames.” That said, the “Blue Flames” comes from Lehran’s Medallion, and not Ike himself.

His Final Smash could be replaced with something like “Yune’s Blessing” where Micaiah shows up, grants him the power of Yune and he does his final attack from Radiant Dawn. Basically, he raises his sword and blue flames shoot into the air, then he performs a more powerful Aether (which is actually more on the ground instead of in the air like with Ike’s “Great Aether”).

Eruption IS based on Bolganone, though, somewhat. Bolganone is a volcanic eruption-type of magic (Bolganone’s is similar to a mistranslated “Volcano”) and usually one of the higher level fire tomes which was actually absent in the three GBA games before being brought back in Path of Radiance.

That said, if they add a mage FE character as a new addition, that character can just get Bolganone and Ike can get his shockwave back. Yes, Ike’s shockwave from Ragnell is exactly what I was referring to.

    ike, the playable beefcake

  • norebo

I was hoping for some Awakening characters, like Crom and Lucina…
    Oh well…

    • JaidynReiman

Still possible. I’d be surprised if we DON’T get a third FE rep. That said, I would be surprised if it was Chrom at this point, since all the newcomers so far bring something really new to Smash Bros., and Chrom just… wouldn’t. He could be unique, but he wouldn’t bring anything new.
