On Tuesday, May 20, Nintendo will be shutting down their online services provided through Nintendo Wi-Fi for Wii and DS software. However, it is important to note that not all content will be affected. The following services will still be accessible after May 20:

  • Internet Channel
  • Amazon Instant Video
  • Netflix
  • Nintendo DS Browser
  • Nintendo DSi Browser
  • Nintendo DSi Shop
  • Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play
  • Wii Shop Channel
  • YouTube

This means that purchasing DSiWare titles on the DSi and WiiWare, and Virtual Console titles on the Wii and the Wii Mode on the Wii U, will still be possible. On the other hand, popular games such as Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart DS, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Phantom Hourglass will lose all online functionality. The fourth and fifth generation Pokemon titles will lose the functionality of online battles and the GTS. Local trading and transferring Pokemon from fifth to sixth gen games will be unaffected, which uses the Nintendo Network rather than Nintendo Wi-Fi.

Also, these changes will not have an impact on Wii U and 3DS online functionality. A full list of affected software titles and features can be found on Nintendo’s website.

I’m really bummed out about this going down, I was really hoping to play some Brawl with friends, but oh well. I never really get to play anyway, my Wii has had this problem with reading Brawl anyway, so I guess it was fun while it lasted, right?

    Farewell, childhood.

On certain consoles, Nintendo is shutting down the WiFi so that means no more GTS, on line battles or trading and other WiFi related Pokemon stuff. Nintendo is really being greedy now forcing people to buy the WiiU and the 3DS in order to have WiFi play of games. I am so mad right now it’s not even funny.
