In today’s Super Smash Bros. “pic of the day”, series director Masahiro Sakurai reveals more details on tether recovery in the game.

For those who aren’t aware, “tether recovery” is a technique where a specific set of characters are able to latch onto the edge of a platform using their personal extendable item. For example, Link has his Clawshot, and Samus has her Grapple Beam. Multiple fighters can also perform a tether at once, but once a player pulls up, normal ledge grabbing rules apply.

Sakurai says on Miiverse:

“Tether recovery? Yes, you can! And from even longer range than before. Multiple fighters can latch on–who actually grabs hold is determined by the same rules as the standard ledge grab.”

    that’s one long chord…

    • Luciano Gianola

To be fair, Link’s recovery is terrible and Samus’s is nothing to write home about.

      • JaidynReiman

I think Link’s recovery has been improved significantly, it reaches much higher than it did in past games. Which is good, Link has always sucked in Smash Bros. despite being popular to play as.

EDIT: Make that fighting games in general. He sucked in Soul Calibur II as well.

Gotta be honest, most of my experience is of SSB64… Still, I haven’t heard much good from competitive players of Brawl and Melee.

          • JaidynReiman

I meant Link’s recovery is improved significantly in this game. We’ve seen it in action and he has far more vertical height now than he did in the past. (But yeah, Link has basically always sucked, so hopefully that’s improved this time.)

          • CEObrainz

Link’s biggest problem was his recovery game, now that his tether is much longer and there is the added ability to have multiple players recovering, Link should be a much better character to use.

    • JaidynReiman

Plus is past Smash Bros. games Link’s reach with his hookshot/clawshot is ridiculous compared to how it is supposed to be in the games. Even this reach of the clawshot is a bit short from the usual.

      • Luciano Gianola

Now if it was the Longshot, he could tether onto the other edge of the stage.

  • Mark

    Yes please.

  • CEObrainz

This is a game mechanic that can change the whole “offstage” game. People who edgehog or edgeguard will have to consider their options much more carefully.

So this Link is the Twilight Princess Link? That’s cool, I was just thinking, “Skyward Sword is the newest one, so maybe they’ll use that Link!”. But nah. Either way, I like Twilight Princess Link a lot, so I’m cool with it.

    • Cole

It’s not the same exact same model as the brawl version of link. I noticed tiny little details have changed. His hair looks more Skyward Sword-esque. It looks like they took the model they used for brawl, and then just put some skyward sword things on it..If you know what I’m saying.

      • Caitlin8898

Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s almost as if they took TP Link and put him in SS style…
