During the recent Super Smash Bros. Direct, series director Masahiro Sakurai announced that both versions of the upcoming instalment in Nintendo’s all-star fighter would be releasing separately. The 3DS is coming this summer, while the Wii U version will release in winter 2014.

It makes sense, given that not everyone will be willing or able to shell out for two brand new games on the same day. This means that Nintendo have a summer blockbuster as well as a guaranteed big hit for Christmas. If you missed it, you can catch the entire Direct broadcast below!

Disclaimer: We realise that this news is now little old, but due to some other priorities within the staff, we were not able to report this information right away. That said, with this being a very important announcement, I think you’ll agree that this was worth publishing for anyone who did not previously catch the broadcast.

Late news is still appreciated news in by book, at any rate I might just have to buy both versions for the unique content found in each version. I wonder how good the online for the 3DS will be, enough so that I can host a “For Glory!” tournament….I hope so.

I finally got Internet down in my basement where my Wii U is, so I can’t wait to see the Wi-Fi battles in the Wii U edition.

Although I may get the 3DS one just for the internet Rush battles.

Yep, hopefully they have minimal lag and loads of options. A tournament mode would have also been nice to see, perhaps its already a feature they haven’t talked about though….
