In yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, Masahiro Sakurai revealed Zelda’s newest attack. In previous versions of Super Smash Bros., Zelda’s Special Down attack was transforming into Sheik. However, in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4, Zelda maintains her princess status by dropping Sheik and delegating her dirty work to a Phantom. Zelda’s new Special Down attack is called Phantom Slash. This attack summons a Phantom to charge at opponents, and can be used a both an offensive and defensive maneuver. Just make sure your opponent doesn’t reflect it back at you! Sheik fans don’t worry, Sheik is still a playable character capable of executing powerful new attacks.

In a perfect world, this would be a move for Toon Zelda, but with Sheik now as a separate character I think they were afraid of overloading the game with too many Zelda characters.

    • CEObrainz

We can be hopeful that Zelda has a “Toon Style” skin but that’s as far as I’d think Nintendo would go in regards to Toon Zelda/Tetra.

      • JaidynReiman

I wouldn’t mind Zelda and/or Sheik having a “Tetra” outfit. It’d be cool seeing a more realistic Tetra design, but I’m sure people would complain at the same time for the redesign.

        • CEObrainz

People complain for everything, but from what we’ve seen this Smash will have a lot of customization, so we can still be hopeful.

      • True Davad

Agreed, that is definitely the best way to handle it. And Toon Link should be an alternate skin for Link while you are at it.

        • JaidynReiman

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are questionable. they have vague ties to the Mario series. Donkey Kong moreso, but they are included in Mario spinoffs. As a whole, though, they are their own franchise, far more than Wario and Yoshi who barely can be considered to have their own sub-franchise.

Right now I basically count Mario as having 6 characters (Yoshi included in that). The Zelda series could get 6 easy (Ganondorf + one new). Toon Link is difficult to simply make an alternate costume, though, because of his size; the Wii Fit Trainers are the same size and build and are both identical, but I still don’t think we should have had Toon Link regardless.

        • CEObrainz

I’d only consider the first 5 + Yoshi to be Mario characters. The rest are too far in their own series to still be relate-able to Mario imo, Zelda should have as many reps as Mario and Pokemon though.

    • JaidynReiman

I’d have preferred if they dropped Toon Link as well, personally.

  • CEObrainz

Ganondorf still has to make an appearance, with perhaps a new design and move-set to go with it. The Phantom Knight looks really cool and also looks like it was an AT before they put it as a move.

    • JaidynReiman

Yeah, I’m kinda thinking Ganondorf might get his OOT design back, but with TP Ganondorf as an alt. I suppose it could be the opposite, though.

Ganondorf definitely needs a complete retool in his moveset, though. That may be one reason we haven’t seen him yet (another being that he’s probably going to be unlockable, and we don’t know if any of these characters except Mega Man and Sonic are unlockable).

      • veeronic

tp ganondorf’s design is by far his best, I don’t see them going back to oot… what I’d like to see is the same move set but built around his sword.

      • CEObrainz

I’m hoping that’s the reason why Captain Falcon hasn’t been revealed yet. Perhaps Sakurai is finding a way for their move-sets to be unique, Captain Falcon most likely keeping his moves whilst Ganondorf gets a new set.

      • Ixbran

The chances of Ganondorf going back to his OoT design is HIGHLY unlikely, soly because of the fact Link, Zelda, and Sheik kept their TP designs. Its likely they are going to give Ganondorf his, so they all match.

    • Amanda

I’ve been curious about the lack of Ganondorf myself, but it looks like there are still some empty spaces for additional fighters on the SSB site.

      • JaidynReiman

We don’t even have the same number of characters as Brawl yet. We’re definitely getting a lot more. Brawl had 39 (35 if you only count character slots), we currently have 29 characters. Its safe to assume Snake, Ivysaur, and Squirtle are out, but anyone else is fair game.

(Yeah, Snake is still possible, but the chances at this point are extremely unlikely.)

        • CEObrainz

We have 29 characters so far and there are still reveals for the Original 12 and Melee Veterans to go. I don’t believe any character that’s in more that 2 games will be dropped unless there is a really good reason.

The roster will easily be as big as Brawl but hopefully has a few characters more. The only thing to consider is the 3DS and any limitations it may have for characters.

  • JaidynReiman

Personally, I still think we’ll get one new Zelda character. The chances of Impa are down, but if they don’t strictly make her ninja-like or give her a dagger/katana to fight with, I think they could still make a good moveset with Impa. Of course they could also draw on her nature of being a Shadow Sage.

Other choice would be Vaati (no way they’ll add Tingle). I still think Impa is the best choice for a new Zelda character, I just don’t think they’ll add one-offs as a playable character. Sorry Ghirahim. Maybe as a boss enemy. (I didn’t think the main antagonists in SS were all that great anyway…)

    • Amanda

Adding Tingle would be so wrong, yet so funny.

      • JaidynReiman

I’ve heard Sakurai has stated that Wii Fit Trainer is not the “joke” character of this game. God if they add Tingle… I’d rather him just be gone all-together, Assist Trophy and all (his Assist Trophy was not shown; it could just be that he’s still an Assist and they haven’t shown him yet).

        • CEObrainz

Tingle would be a wasted character slot for the Zelda reps and Smash in general. There is only a slot for Ganondorf and if they were generous one more character. Tingle couldn’t get a place as it would mean the Zelda series has more reps than the Mario franchise.

          • JaidynReiman

If they add Tingle as a sixth character, not really. I can see both Mewtwo and Jigglypuff getting in, making the total number come up to 6 for Pokemon, and I count Yoshi as a Mario character, making that 6. Zelda should have as many as Mario.

I do think Tingle would be a wasted slot, but I fear that Sakurai may troll us and add Tingle. I sure hope not, though, there’s way better choices from the Zelda series.

          • CEObrainz

That makes sense, if this game is going to be the biggest one yet that would also justify the expansion of the main franchise’s.

Tingle needs to stay an AT, I’d rather have Ghirahim as a new character that uses his dual swords.

    • True Davad

      Spoilers for SKyward Sword:
One-offs? I love Vaati but Impa has been in more games than Vaati. She was an old Lady in Zelda 2 and A Link Between Worlds, A Fat Lady in the Oracle Games and the version you are probably thinking of the Ninja Lady from Ocarina of Time AND Skyward Sword. I don’t think the will add either Impa or Vaati though.
      Spoilers End Here
The Skyward Sword Villains have a far better chance if you ask me. Tingle may return as an Assist Trophy but no way a character. Even if they did: They would have to make up every move except the Balloons and Tingle Bomb, And I hate when they make the moves up completely for Smash Bros like what they did with Ganondorf. Don’t get me wrong, I love using him, but it isn’t Ganondorf’s moveset. It is a stronger but slower version of Captain Falcons with a few more tweaks in Brawl to differentiate them. It has no basis in the Zelda Games. Have him use his Zelda game magic and sword moves. And make the old one a alternate moveset, because that would be a cool idea toi have alternate movesets.

      • JaidynReiman

Sorry, you didn’t quite get my meaning. What I said is I still think Impa is the best choice because she’s appeared in so many games in the series. I wasn’t calling Impa a one-off, although I guess I did word that badly.

I was saying I don’t think characters like Ghirahim, Midna, Skull Kid, or Demise will make it in as playable because they are one-time characters. Two of the most suggested choices for Zelda characters have already been relegated to Assist Trophies, both of whom are one-off characters.

And yeah, Ganondorf needs to have his own attacks.

        • Anthony Moseley

Despite Impa appearing in more games, her “ninja” appearance has only appeared in OoT & SS. I don’t see her being a playable character either, especially with her being such a minor character. If they were going to go with any Zelda character, it would probably be a major character like Ghirahim, though I doubt we’ll see him either. Sadly, Tingle seems like the most obvious choice, though I really hope they wouldn’t put him in the game.

          • JaidynReiman

Impa’s been an important character in most of her appearances. She’s not a minor character by any means. Yeah, her “ninja” appearance has only appeared twice, but Ghirahim has had only one game appearance.

If they’re planning on bringing Ghirahim back in the future… I wouldn’t mind him being added to Smash and I think he’d be very likely. It would be cool if Ghirahim was brought back as Ganondorf’s sidekick in future games. I doubt he will, though, and likewise doubt he’d be added to Smash as well, but who knows…

  • Morgan

I want toon zelda and Demise or Ganondorf next.

    • JaidynReiman

I’d rather not have Toon Zelda and I doubt Demise will replace Ganondorf. Ganondorf probably would be the next announced Zelda character, but its possible they might save him for late, especially if he’s been revamped.

      • CEObrainz

What if they give Ganondorf a sword (Think Zelda Tech Demo in 2000), then Demise can simply be a skin for Ganondorf?

        • JaidynReiman

Demise being a skin for Ganondorf is the only way I can see him getting in. Though if they base Ganondorf on Twilight Princess they’d probably use that one instead.

          • CEObrainz

I’d want both, but I do prefer his design from OOT, TP just seems a bit too bulky for me.

  • TristanTsunami

If they do a new Zelda Character:
I want Ghirahim, his movesset I can see how much fun it would be, and the possiblities for his Final Smash are just as interesting to me as well.
If not Ghirahim, I’d settle for Zant.
