Did you think that Grand Theft Auto V, or perhaps The Last of Us would end up winning the 2013 Game of the Year award? Not in the minds of the editors at GameSpot. They chose A Link Between Worlds as their 2013 Game of the Year, which is quite a surprise considering the steep competition the game faced. Hit after the jump to hear what GameSpot had to say about their choice and to see the competition A Link Between Worlds faced off against.

“Decades have come and gone without an entry in the Zelda franchise reaching the heights of A Link Between Worlds. While such an accomplishment warms the heart of anyone who has dutifully stood by Link during his ups and down, it has little bearing on this prestigious award.

Just for a second, remove the nostalgic tingle of exploring a familiar version of Hyrule. Forget any sentimental attachment you may have for hookshots and bottled fairies. A Link Between Worlds is fantastic in its own right. It frees you of any tutorial shackles and sets you loose in a bustling world with only your own curiosity to guide you. Such unrestrained exploration is empowering. And when the many puzzles stumped us, it was all the more satisfying to figure out a solution using our own ingenuity.”

A Link Between Worlds was joined by some fine company, with fellow nominees Assassin’s Creed IV, The Last of UsGrand Theft Auto V, Tearaway, and Super Mario 3D World.

In a year where the Nintendo 3DS dominated hardware sales and released some of the highest quality software seen all year, A Link Between Worlds reigns supreme and is GameSpot’s 2013 Game of the Year. Congratulations to both Nintendo and the Zelda team on creating such a magical adventure that has touched the hearts of many all around the world. What this tells us is that 27 years after its initial release, The Legend of Zelda is still relevant in the hearts and minds of many and Nintendo is still developing some incredibly high quality content for their fans.
