Even though it’s the “black sheep” of the Zelda franchise, Zelda II is still a Zelda game. Having taken a step away from the original Legend of Zelda, it experimented with sidescrolling for Zelda. Even though the idea didn’t stick for the Zelda series, Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d you steal out garbage? creator Pendleton Ward has decided to use the idea for his new game.

Read on to see why.

Much like Zelda II, the game is split between two different gameplay segments – the topdown portions where you traverse the overworld map to reach the various areas, and the side-scrolling portions during battle and in towns and dungeons.

This isn’t the only homage to Zelda. Ward added in a door which brings forth the phrase, “Hey man! It’s dangerous to go alone!” Ward and the Wayforward developers were both happy to add in the “nostalgia factor” to their game. It’s Ward’s way of saluting an older time of gaming. Even with the Zelda II style of gameplay, it has a much more modern twist. The enemies drop items for Finn and Jake to pick up and use as power-ups, though the items are fairly strange, as is the nature of Adventure Time.

So, do you think it’s neat that there are Zelda references in this game? Do you plan to play the game? Tell us in the comments below.
