2011 has been a good year for the Zelda series, with Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time 3D being released. But what’s next for the series?

Eiji Aonuma told a Portuguese gaming site, MyGames, that a new Zelda title will be made for the 3DS. Aonuma told the site:

We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS. We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.

Hang on, this doesn’t mean that there won’t be a Majora’s Mask remake. Nintendo has just decided that it wouldn’t seem right if they released remake after remake, so they now plan on making a completely new original Zelda game.

As Aonuma said:

It’s something I’m asked about often and I assure you that it is something I’ve spoken to Miyamoto about. But recently we released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake. We are considering the idea, but it didn’t seem right to launch a remake one after another, so the next Zelda game on 3DS will be original.

What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments!

Though it says that the next will be original there's not even a hint of when it will be released, for all we know it's just an idea that's on paper, or they've decided that the next one will be original and for 3DS, that could be their only plan. The post doesn't seem like a fraud, it seems like they released information a little too early.

    • A_LINK_IN_TIME

Welcome back from a long hiatus! Seeing as how quickly Nintendo made spirit Tracks, this game has a chance of releasing late 2012/early 2013.

      • i8oprah

True, Spirit Tracks was a step up from phantom hourglass, but still not the style we were hoping for, if it comes out too early it could be something else we're not too crazy about, or nintendo has hidden something behind the curtain of skyward sword, and make a surprise a new style of zelda.

        • Chris

Is that the general consensus, that ST is better than PH??? Wow, I'm kind of surprised, I hated Spirit Tracks in every way but the soundtrack and items (SAND WAND). Especially the pan flute or whatever. Good God the pan flute… ,

  • Azariah

I'm glad to hear about this. Redundancy is never good for a series of video games. I wonder if It will be a brand new design for Link or if Toon Link will be coming back. One thing is fore sure, I don't think we will be running into a Zelda drought anytime soon 🙂

    • Banooru

I think I'll spend a couple years just looking at my unwrapped Skyward Sword bundle. Good thing I'm not getting it with the Japanese box art, otherwise it might be much longer. Either way, I could last a drought twice as long as the '90s

  • Sakume

I for one like Toon Link, but I'm tired of seeing him on handhelds after the Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass. I would love to see another 3D rendering of Link as he was (or close to that design) in OoT. Of course, you know, with a brand new game. Could take years though. MM would be nice to tide us over.

    • ZMFan99

I want to see a Link to the Past AND Majora's Mask 🙂 i know its high expectations but Miyamato and Aonuma are getting my hopes up because of the interviews

    • johaun348

I think they should make a toon link game only if it is like windwaker, there is a big differnce beetween windwaker graphics and ph/st. ph/st is more 2dish

  • Leendy

    God Dammit now I gotta get a 3DS -___-

  • Tom

It better use the same graphics/layout as OoT 3D. I can't bear another Spirit Tracks or Phantom Hourglass.

  • A_LINK_IN_TIME

I'm expecting a whole new graphical style and a game at least as complex as the N64 Zeldas.

  • Lancelot-sama!

I'm actually not going to try and guess on things or put up high expectations because I don't want to disappoint myself. Plus, I want to be surprised!

  • Sweet-Cheeks

They can't possibly take a step back to the over-head view, especially after OoT3D.

    • Metal Man

There's nothing wrong with the overhead view, some of the best Zelda games have used that style (excluding ST and PH). As long as it's not done in a completely retarded way, an overhead Zelda could be pretty great. It'd be nice to have a Zelda that returns to it's roots in a way that isn't completely reliant on a touch screen.

  • Blu_Lizalfos

I'd love to see a new hand-held game in the Zelda series. One that really stands out because it has an extremely in-depth storyline outside of the whole Hyrule thing but can also relate to the mainstream Zelda games (like MM did). Can't wait to see what it is!!!

  • Coffee

I don't really care if its a Toon Link or a realistic Link, but i just hope that its not going to be an over-head view type Zelda game

  • 3DS-less

well didn't Aonuma say that they were going to make and release the new zelda for the 3DS, and then after that, release Majora's Mask 3D?

  • ABAZELDAFAN

    I WHANT A NEW ZELDA

    • Ammy

umm… Skyward Sword ring any bells?

  • Hyrule's Shadow

Yes! It was worth it buying the 3DS!!!!!!! WIth all the new remakes, i think they should get on a new Zelda!!!!!!!!!!! Wonder what the title will be? ("Legend of Zelda:Secrets of Hyrule" or "Legend of Zelda:Shadow sword", that one's kind of like Skyward sword, but just an idea!)

    • Zachattack8888

      lol wut?

    • Guest

Its going to be called Links Wonderous World.

    • 12345678bob

      -18? D: anyway, we'll see ^U^

    • Jared

Secrets of hyrule would be an AMAZING NAME FOR AN AMAZING GAME!

  • Absol

If they do make a new zelda game i hope they use the 3ds graphics to the max!

  • GabrielM

They didn't say "no" to Majora's Mask being remade for 3DS, they just said it wasn''t right to do it right now. That's good!!

About Zelda 3DS, I'd love to see a game worth dethroning A Link to the Past, with epic storyline and graphics. Please make it happen, Nintendo.

  • lulles

i can't wait for this new 3ds zelda! but it's good news they are considering making a majora's mask 3d.

  • It'd be good to see a new Zelda title, but I hope Majora's Mask 3D is developed soon after that.

  • jmoods

Dudes. Nobody needs a MM remake. It's fine the way it is.

    • iehwgk

Then going by your logic, what was wrong with Oot that made it get a remake, then? and don't give me "Oh because it's popular!" bullshit, because then you'll be a hypocrite.

    • kkk

Yeah, but i'd be great to have it on my hand and take it everywhere, besides, the graphical makeup and 3D candy don't hurt.

  • Frandlopy

I like all Zelda games regardless to how Nintendo makes them. My favorite one is Wind Waker because it has all those nice girls like Aryll, Tetra, Medli, Mila, Maggie and of course Toon Zelda.

  • joebob247

they should put diggs from zelda uo ( a youtube anime show) in the zelda game and base it on the uo series

  • johaun348

remember the graphic style of FSA? there should be a sterioscopcal 3d 2d game with the style of those graphics, but just have one link. it could be a really long game with lots of sidequests and minigames. you should be able to ride epona and unlock epona in a certain part of the game. there will be masterquest and boss battle mode. new and old items. good plot and a dark realm to make the game even longer like in ALttP. that game itself should keep you busy for awhile. a 3d would be great too but I miss 2d games personally. if it was in 3d 3d it would be still a blast but it would be not as long.

  • Guest

An new game for 3DS will be awesome! And if they remake Majora's Mask after it, which I really hope they do, then there's two more reasons to buy a 3DS! Glad I already did 😀

  • X x7

I'd really like a new Zelda game for 3DS, and I hope that it can implement the touch screen, gyroscope, etc. and implement everything into a great, new Zelda experience!

(Also, it shouldn't go back to the top view, keep it like it was for Ocarina of Time 3D).

  • Deity

I'd love a new game with design similar to Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask or TWP. Personally, I would just like something with a PLOT that is as deep as Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. If they can give me those two things, I am happy. Even the elements of Skyward Sword would be welcomed with open arms. The weapons blending idea is sheer brilliance.

  • Guest

    It's portuguese, not portugese.

  • TheMaverickk

Like I've said in the past… Majora's Mask 3D will likely be made, and is a project that Nintendo already has in mind. It's just that they don't want to release it right away…. I still don't understand the need to have petitions, and things Operation Moonfall.

It's the Zelda series, they've re-released games and done remakes, why wouldn't this be a likely possibility.

Personally I can't wait to see what kind of adventure they can create with the 3DS though… I mean I'm hoping for an adventurous Zelda title in lines with the idea's that were in Majora's Mask.

    • megaknight

operation moonfall proved that fans were interested in a remake to nintendo. If they didn't see the amount of fan support it was getting, then they wouldn't have even considered remaking it.

  • Zachattack8888

I love Toon Link a lot but PH and ST were absolutely horrible games. I swear, if we get another DS-Zelda-Esque game I'll be incredibly disappointed.
I have faith though that Nintendo is gonna bring us an exciting new title.

  • Keimori

Well this was a no brainer, of course they'd be making a new entry for the 3DS, I'm glad they're putting off the MM remake for awhile, the 3DS needs new games more than anything right now.

That being said, what’s with all the damn PH/ST Hate? I'll admit PH was annoying, but ST was well done, not brilliant sure, but still, it was a fun and solid game.
I understand wanting more challenge, the game was easy, but it wasn't horrible.

    • TheMaverickk

Spirit Tracks was actually a great game. In fact I think it would've been appreciated a lot more if Phantom Hourglass hadn't been released a mere 2 years earlier.

I think people just weren't impressed that two games so similar were released one after another.

Phantom Hourglass was a major disappointment to me….. it was extremely easy, it rehashed and dumbed down the ocean exploration of Wind Waker, it lacked the punch of being a memorable Zelda title. Lineback was the saving grace for PH… a great unique character for the story… much like how Midna was the saving grace of Twilight Princess.

Just sadly it was a game that didn't bring much new to the series, and didn't feel like an epic adventure. Spirit Tracks was a grand scale adventure with an amazing pair of villains, and memorable characters like the Lokomo sages, especially Byrne.

You had Zelda, a new world, great enemies, and an amazing soundtrack (listen to it, it blows Phantom Hourglass out of the water).

      • Keimori

        Agreed.
I also love the story, the relationship between Link and Zelda makes me all goofy on the inside, I just love the comedic moments they have, "I'll just stay here and wait for you, I hear it’s a family tradition!" that line cracks me up.
There are a lot of moments like that in there that just make the game.

And I'll admit it, I LOVE driving that train, it's an honestly fun thing to do and I feel it works way better than the boat.

I also agree with you on the soundtrack. (Nice pun there by the way.)

Its tunes will often get stuck in my head, which in my opinion, that a sign of a really good soundtrack.

I especially love Chancellor Cole’s thyme, it has that sort of wacky and quirky tone to it that just screams evil scheming villain, and it reminds me a lot of Majora's thyme, with that sort of ominous yet playful sound.

      Forgot the "h" there mate.

  • Alex Delderfield

Id be very surprised if Nintendo didnt remake Majoras Mask after this new Zelda game is complete.
Super excited for more info on this new one though 😀

  • josh anderson

first of all i don't want too see a top screen view i want too see a third person view and i want to see a new Zelda game that have a lot of items hard puzzles and a lot of things to find and do

  • Link

I am currently waiting patiently to get LoZ Skyward Sword and a new 3DS to play Ocarina of Time 3D. I'm being honest, I kind of agree with Aonuma. I don't see the point to keep on making remakes. Still I would love to play a Majora's Mask remake my self. Since I am a fan of both OoT and Majoras Mask. They already have Lugui's Mansion 2 3D for pre-order. Since Luigi's Mansion 2 is a Nintendo 3DS original title. I can see where Aonuma is coming from here. Making original titles will be a good thing, and a good thing for the company. I may be wrong but I still agree with him on everything, Maybe we'll see a Majora's Mask remake when we start seeing videos and pics of Zelda 3D, who knows. We just have to wait and see.

  • anthrosxiii

I honestly think its a good idea making a brand new game just for the 3ds will be able to actually experience what the 3ds has to offer with an already well recived game. And it will keep the tension up for the later release of majoras mask (They'd better release it). I mean we just got out of oot wating a little more for the sequel of it sems a little right.

But frankly i really dont mind if they release majoras mask tomorrow its an amazing game and all of the elements of oot are made and i'd bet the fans will recive it with open arms ether way

  • Jared

This bugs me "but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.", to me that means it will be side scroll or above head not 3rd person like oot or skyward. If they mean takes from the story then cool but when you think of that it reminds me of the first zelda trying to find out what to do in the begaining

  • brian torres

they told me the same thing in gamestop as well

  • Hit the jump for the first video in the series, and the playlist, to watch Let’s Play: Zelda’s Adventure for yourself.

The game is called: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
