"The power is in your hands!"

Released under the condition of anonymity, a videogame developer working on the Nintendo 3DS revealed to IGN the specs for the forthcoming handheld device, and my goodness, they’re impressive!

Hit the jump for the disclosure on the hardware!

According to this annonymous source, the 3DS will contain two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs! The little powerhouse will also feature 1.5GBs of flash storage, 64MBs of RAM, 4MBs of dedicated VRAM, and a 133MHz GPU!

What does all of this mean?

Well, according to those developing games for the 3DS, its graphics are on par with the likes of the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

This, coupled with the rumored release date of November 22, 2010 certainly has us excited.

ummm…….if Nintendo could have a system with 360 graphics, why wouldn't they put that on their home console? I mean, I love the Wii but let's face it it's graphics are just plain and simple not as good as 360. I know, I know, that's not a bad thing it's the gameplay that matters, I know. but why would Nintendo purposely not give their consoles as much graphical power as they could?

    • Tomdabomb

Maybe they couldn't at the time

    • 10n3r

im saying! its funny how the handheld is more powerful than the console version!

      • Foh

Yeah, why does Nintendo love their handhelds so much? I prefer consoles.

    • Link

It's because this is made for graphics the wii is made for motion controls plain and simple.

    • Ferisan

Im along the thought of Tomdabomb. I think they couldn't of the time, and maybe the Wii successor will have better graphics? Just a thought :3~

          • Nintenfan81

No, not really. Nintendo is the best by far but the Xbox is still pretty awesome. Actually, in my experience FPS games are much better on the Box than the Wii.

*Stares back into the glowing red glares of the community.*

            …..please don't kill me….

          • ChainofTermina

no, it's okay. I agree with with you on the first part. over half of my favorite games are on the 360. it's just what the community keeps saying, 360 is more aimed at hardcore gamers and Wii is more aimed at casual. and that's fine.

but most FPSs are crap anyway.

    • hyliandan

With the Wii, they wanted to reach a broad audience of non-traditional gamers, which meant the price would need to be lower than what you'd pay for a 360 or PS3. So they didn't make the system insanely powerful so they could sell it for less and reach these new customers.

      • Link Elf

That and the fact that Nintendo had a poor income during the Gamecube era, so they didn't have that much money to pay for those better graphics the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have. I prefer Wii's motion control over Xbox and PS3's graphics anytime.

    • Oxling

They probably will do it with the Wii's successor.

    • dkp

Also, remember how long the Wii has been out. It was released in what, late 2006? So that means it's had almost 4 years of shelf life- which is about the end of average system life (5y). Consider how much technology improves over time. The ability to store data doubles about every two years or so, I think. And the wii was primitive for it's time, being nothing more than about two gamecubes ducktaped together with motion control.

So it makes sense that technology has progressed to accomodate such a thing.

    • Vibed

In reality, the 3DS is not even close to the Xbox360/PS3, but it's on a much small screen, so the graphics can only get so good on a several inch screen before it doesn't matter.

Plus, the Wii came out 4 years ago in 2006, 3DS is 2010.

    • CreepyOldNeighbor

To put it simply, they probably just didn't have access to that kind of graphical power at the time of the Wii's making, as surprising as that is. Now that they have access to it, however, they want to make use of it.

      • dudr

Stop being biased, the wii would have never been bought by hardcore gamers if it didnt have zelda or mario or metroid. And gameplay wise it totally goes 360

  • Keith

whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa that impressive of specs? God this'll be sold out for MONTHS… o-o

  • Joko tree

Nintendo is the best! WII have known that for years and now they're going a step further.Microsoft and Sony should just give up,because there is No way; they can ever be as good as Nintendo. 🙂

  • Joko tree

Do you get the WII / we joke

    • Paffe

      I got it!

      • Joko tree

Yay you got it.Somebody got my joke. 🙂

        • Sarcasm

No, I would have never understood it if it wasn't thanks to your guiding hand of comedy.

          Thanks a lot.

          • Joko tree

            Yay.

  • Fuss-Budget

Godly specs. If that's the case, then OoT 3DS better look freakin' amazing. Like, PS3/360/HD amazing.

But this makes me worry about the price…

    • Lucas

I will probably not look as good, mostly because its early in the 3DS's life and the screen is small.

      • Joko tree

Dude you made a little mistake there.

  • Google Says

    hOLY CRAPhooooooly crap8

  • This tells exactly why Nintendo has been in front of Sony and Microsoft for years! And now we'll be able to bring it with us just like a PSP, but with far better graphics.

    • ILiekZelda

Acually Sony and Microsoft have been ahead of Nintendo for about 2-3 years, the Wii came out and put Nintendo ahead, then Sony and MS got competitive and got ahead of the Wii, now you see Nintendo would always be ahead if they always updated there home concel every 1-2 years like MS and Sony, and the Black Wii doesnt count, Nintendo is my fave company, but right now MS and Sony are ahead, Nintendo, better step up up your home concel!

      • TnzSki

        That's 'console'

      • Triforce of the Gods

Uh, last time I checked, the DS was outselling the Wii, PS3, and 360 by A LOT. Nintendo was always ahead.

        • Joko tree

You know what; we should all look on the internet and find out who's right.I won't because I'm on a quest to find out who ate my cake.(joke)

        • ILiekZelda

But they still need to upgrade their main console, its more important

  • Nice one Nintendo! Love them specs! Can't wait to buy it. All I need to know now is the price and I'm happy! Oh wait…need to save up first!

  • Smoore

These specs are amazing! I can’t believe how much they’ve packed in there. It is incredible…. You know the means the next console is gonna be beastly. You can’t have a handheld packing this much punch without an equally impressive console system to match it. The Wii is to DS and GameCube was to the GBA. The 3DS deserves a whole new system worthy of it.

  • Lunchbox

I seriously doubt my 3DS is going to look like my PS3.

    Over exaggeration is over exaggerated.

    • Z-MAN7

      Resident Evil: Revelations says hi.

      • Dan

I'm sorry, but I don't believe I've actually seen any real-time gameplay to support the idea that Resident Evil will look that good. Trailers mean nothing in terms of graphics.

        • Z-MAN7

That was real-time, it was confirmed by Capcom.

    • Dzzy123

Nintendo can do anything. They are the fathers of video games. They saved it.

  • Shadow Link 4ever

I just really think they could push the Wii's capabilities a little more further but still keep the Wii's gamplay style, I just really hope that they push the Wii a little more and it's awsome gameplay along with great graphics but I hope they can do all that and make it still buyable

    • they arent gona make a wii hd just because some people dont care about gameplay and just graphics. in gamepro magazene they mark down every wii game because it doesnt have hd graphics and that pisses me off. people are getting hd and 3d in one console AND its portable. a wii successor is in develoment but it wont be out till at LEAST 3 years from now. so just be happy with the 3ds

  • LuX

    Now your playing with power!

      NINTENDO POWER!!!

  • Per

That is not very impressive compared to a iphone 4 or the new samsung android phone.

    IPhone 4:
1000 MHz A4 CPU (ARM based)
    512 MB RAM
    16/32 GB Flash

Compared to that these specs does not look very impressive at all.

    • Ferisan

Well it's comparing it to other 2 GAME systems, not phones. They obviously are different.

      • Per

Well, acording to the article it said an ARM 11 cpu (similar to A4). Also the iphone 4 has an a very powerfull graphics chip. I saw a demo of the unreal engine runing on it, amazing. Also ID softwares new ID 5 engine has been ported to iphone 4 and looks even more impressive. My guess is that the 3DS will not be as powerfull as iphone 4, but it wount matter, as long as it can do decent graphics I am ok 🙂 it will give the developers more time to focus on gameplay.

        • keimori

yes, but I think you're compareing apples to oranges, the Iphone4 and 3DS are very differnt things, and besides, theres still alot of outher stuff that changes the final look of a game on the system, like card limitations, and timeconstriants, ect.

    • 3DS

Let's see you play Ocarina of Time 3D on the iphone or samsung android phone.

  • Link

This is pretty cool but remember it is an unknown source, so we have to take it with a grain of salt.

    • bastian

It's certainly wise to think that way, however this is IGN we're talking about. And their source is a developer who has access to this information. The developer is unlikely to lie to IGN.

      Just sayin'.

  • Victor George

Could that mean The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess may be possible on the 3DS? Hmmm…

    • Joko tree

The wind Waker maybe later but the twilight princess is on the WII.So there will be no TP on anything but the WII.Ok. 🙂

      • Oxling

But if the successor to the wii is out soon, then it's likely.

      • Triforce of the Gods

*facepalm* TP is a GameCube game that was also ported to the Wii with tacked on Wii controls.

    • Kokiri Star

nah there both to recent to make a remake worth it…besides id rather a brand new zelda was made for the system to push it to its limits than another remake.

  • PS3 graphics!!!!!!!!!!!! this is gonna be one of the 7 wonders of the world.

    • Joko tree

No after this there will be 8 wonders of the world

  • kyoko12

    Um…

Well, please compare the specs of a PS3 and these specs… They are faaaar from being on par. The 3DS wil NEVER have equal graphics to a PS3 or an XBOS 360…

    • METC

When they say that, they mean it relative to the resolution capabilities of each respective console.

    • 3DS

In the other hand, you will NEVER be able to play OoT 3D or Skyward Sword on PS3 or Xbox 360…

  • tooto

    Doubtful.

  • Abodos

    I'm confused.

If the 3DS can display graphics on par with the PS3 and 360, as these specs would have us believe, then how come the footage and screenshots that we've seen look more like Wii graphics? Did they scale things back at E3 to keep things a surprise for later? Or is some of that processing power being eaten up for the 3D effect?

    • Chad

      http://www.1up.com/news/3ds-games-graphics-physic
The processing power is eaten up by the 3D but apparently the 2D games can be made to look like 360 games. The thing is Stereoscopic 3D works by displaying 2 pictures overlapping and it take twice the processing power of the regular DS to do that.

      • John

        I agree

  • Joko tree

Keep in mind the 3ds hasn't been released yet so Nintendo might make a few changes. 🙂

  • veeronic

obviously fake, if nintendo had these capabilities we would have seen them already on the wii.

    • Joko tree

Nintendo mainly cares about the gameplay not the graphics so they could be doing things a bit differently but you could be right. :/

      • That is exactly what I say to PS3 lovers in my school because they always exaggerate the graphics. I say would you rather have an awesome game with terrible graphics? Or a game that that graphics rock but the game play is absolutely terrible.

    • Note: The PS3 was after the Wii came out.

      • My comment above was to Veeronic by the way.

    • Oxling

Something that was released 4 years ago. Company's capabilities can easily improve over that time.

      • Obviously you doubt Nintendo's abilities. They've never really lied to us before. So the graphics will most likely be equal to the 360/'PS3.

    • frigis

1.) The wii was released 4 years ago
2.) The wii was released when Nintendo was having financial issues
3.) Nintendo is no longer having financial issues due to the boom in sales of the wii and DS
4.) This kind of technology already exists in other handheld devices, Nintendo is not doing anything new here.
5.) It's too early to step wii into the next gen, too many people already own the wii and sales aren't declining enough. Once sales have declined enough, we will see the next console gen.

I'm pretty sure that this is perfectly possible. Not saying that it is, but it's perfectly possible.

  • Sir Calibur

These are fakes specs. The trailer for Ocarina of Time 3DS contradict them. And a developer who requests anonymity? Anyone with common sense knows that anonymity is a sign of bullshit in the world of video games.

    • Actually that was purely created to give people something to talk about, they're only in the planning stages for OOT 3D, they were preliminary graphics they wanted to display in 3D to showcase Zelda and 3DS. It will most likely look a whole lot better than that.

      • Chad

The trailer was made using unfinished graphics for a game using A different type of screen and resolution than your computer. Judge the 3DS when it comes out not by what it looks like. If it really does come out November 22nd then they have plenty of time to adjust graphics and finish the game system and game up! Two months can make a big difference especially when they're doing the final push for the game system and games!

  • ZeldaGurl_

Alrighty! This is music to my ears, man!!!

I was already going to be excited about the 3D part, and now that we've been told of its amazing graphics, graphics that come to par with PS3 graphics, it just puts the icing on the cake.

Hey, until we find out what the revolution of the Wii's successor is… I think this will be one heckuva beastly piece of machinery. Great job Nintendo, lets see it! 😀

  • Diex

Guys, and I'm not saying this to hate, because those are some nice specs for a handheld gaming system, but those specs are no where even near the specs of a 360 or a PS3.

First of all, and I'm a PS3 owner here, the PS3 has 256mb of graphics memory clocked at 700Mhz, and an Nvidia RSX based chip clocked at 550Mhz. This means the PS3 will have better textures, and will be able to push way more pixels than the 3DS.

Secondly, the PS3 has a Cell Processor with eight–count 'em–EIGHT SPUs clocked at 3.2Ghz each. Compare that the the 3DS' 266Mhz and you don't even have a contest.

I'm sorry, guys, but the handheld just won't have the godly graphics we all hope it would have.

    • Joko tree

But still keep in mind that Nintendo have surprised us with the super fx chip or whatever it was that gave Starfox amazing graphics on the SNES.

  • seacher99

    @ Diex
it has the graphics of a PS3, but on a MUCH smaller screen.
With a small resolution you need less specs than for a big one. You can't really compare. 3DS on a TV would look awful (compared to PS3)

    • Diex

Not really. When you compare it to a PSP, the specs aren't really that much more impressive.

The only real difference is the PSP has a higher clocked CPU, but a lower amount of available graphic memory, which means the textures won't be as nice on a PSP, but it has a higher clock speed–clocked at 166Mhz–meaning it can draw more complex models.

      And a PSP doesn't compare to a PS3.

It's not going to look anything like a PS3, guys. Don't get me wrong, I'm really looking forward to the 3DS, but let's not over-exaggerate its performance, OK?

  • LoZisSo69

    Nintendo wins. Period.

This is really impressive, but not nearly along the lines of a Xbox360/PS3.
That doesn't matter though because it's on a several inch screen. 😉

  • Home console graphics and 3D? This is certainly nice, specially when people are more into portable consoles than home consoles. I think he day when home consoles will be less popular than portable ones is drawing near.

hi there the reason a nintendo 2 266 mhz cpus out performes a 3.2 ghz 3 core cpu its simple realy nintendo 3ds has a 3.5 inch 3d screen and the ps3 is conected too a 53 inch tv soo the ps3 has 15 times bigger screen then the 3ds thats why the fill rate is faster then ps3 having a 15 times bigger screen reqiers 15 times cpu power for same fill rate soo basacly soo the ps3 needs 45 ghz cpu too keep up with a nintendo 3ds
