The Regginator

In a far away land (New York), long, long ago, a young man played A Link to the Past, his first Zelda game, and fell in love with the franchise. Little did he know, it would eventually become a part of his profession.

In a recent interview with IFC (Independentย Film Channel), Reggie Fils-Aime (President and COO of Nintendo of America) revealed that he has been a Zelda fan far longer than anyone could have guessed.

Long before he came to be employed by Nintendo, in fact. Like so many of us, he played A Link to the Past when it was released and has loved the series since. This is perfect since the franchise is now a huge factor in his career.

IFC asked Reggie if he felt that longtime Zelda fans would be put off by the motion control-only controls for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Mr. Fils-Aime answered:

“I’ll tell you: I’m a longtime ‘Zelda’ fan. I played ‘Zelda’ before I ever considered that I could be working for the company. I cut my teeth on ‘Link to the Past.’ I’ve picked up that control scheme and it feels like a great ‘Zelda’ game.”

He went on to say:

“I am the one deciding how to attack a particular enemy. It feels great to me. I found that it’s a fantastic new way to experience the “Zelda” franchise.”

While his words can certainly be attributed to marketing hyperbole, it is refreshing to hear that one of the biggest names at Nintendo started out as a Zelda fan long before ever dreaming he could work for the company he loved so much. Which of us reading this will end up making the same journey?

Ah, this is so cool for him. If I was in his position, I'd be equally ecstatic. But since I'm not, I'll still have to be content with sampling their work. 8D

In French doesn't his name mean "Reggie likes boys" or something like that?

    • bastian

I think "fils" means "son." So I guess his name would mean that he loves his son(s). ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Hahaha! Well I don't really know if you're trying to be funny or are actually asking a question, but his last name (Fils-Aime) it split up with two word and "Fils" is the word "son" and "Aimer" is the verb "to like" but it's already been converted in his name…So it's not technically Reggie Likes Boys XD

    Reggie is mad! ๐Ÿ˜›

  • I hope I'll make the same journey and become Nintendo's concept artist for Zelda ๐Ÿ™‚

I don't know if reggie is/was fan of nintendo games, but he shows all the time that he knows staff about them and that is GOOD for his job. He knows what makes Zelda a popular franchise, same goes for mario, donkey kong country returns, metroid etc. There is no better way to sell your games than to know why they are good games.

  • I am making the same decision as Reggie. JK.
    I WISH ๐Ÿ˜€

If I can remember correctly, Reggae also said he was a long time zelda fan in an interview with him about spirit tracks and other DS games in that weird-but-amusing nintendo week show on the nintendo channel on the Wii, but I don't remember exactly when the interview was.

  • Don't worry, I plan on being a video game character designer for Nintendo ๐Ÿ˜‰ Tehehe! Sorry if I come off as cocky, I'm just confident in myself! ๐Ÿ˜€ And I love that picture of Reggie! XD

I could swear I read somewhere (on this site IIRC) that Reggie didn't play games. Maybe he's just a casual gamer which was misconstrued as none at all. Maybe I don't remember right. It was a few years ago, I think, which is why I'm not doing an archive binge. So sorry if I'm wrong.
