We’re not sure if it was our much-publicized post about Ocarina of Time slipping to No. 2 beneath Super Mario Galaxy 2 that did the trick, but, whatever the case may be, it seems that Ocarina of Time is right back where it belongs – that sweet, sweet number one spot.

Well, kind of.

Although Ocarina of Time is listed first in the All-Time Best list on Gamerankings.com, its score is actually tied with Super Mario Galaxy 2 at 97.48%. Ever since we posted about Super Mario Galaxy 2 dethroning Ocarina of Time, so to speak, the two games’ scores have been fluctuating day to day.

However, it seems that Ocarina of Time will come out on top – yesterday, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was third on the list, behind Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Galaxy. This can probably be attributed to the extra reviews that keep coming in for Galaxy 2, constantly changing its ranking in the list.

One thing seems certain, though: it looks like our favorite game isn’t leaving its its prized top spot any time soon. And even if, by some chance, it does slip behind Galaxy 2 again, we’re not about to complain about three Nintendo titles stealing the top three spots!

(Thanks to everyone who sent this in!)
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 deserves that spot more than Ocarina of Time does. >_> Hell, Ocarina of Time isn't even the best Zelda game (at least in my opinion). The Wind Waker is.

    • TheMaverickk

I would agree that OoT isn't the best Zelda game ever. I'd actually prefer to give that spot to either Majora's Mask or Link to the Past. Wind Waker is in my top 3 though. Depending on my mood certain one take priority.

    • X x7

yeah but dont you want a game of your favorite series on top?

  • Just A Comment

But SMG2 didn’t revolutionize gaming like Ocarina did.

    Rock on, Ocarina!

    • It's not a matter of being revolutionary or not, it's a matter of which is the better game. >_>

  • ZoraMikau

Take that b****es. hahaha, i knew ooT wouldn't ast in second place. Watch some people review OoT just because of this, then we'll really win, as long as they give usa good score.

  • Goro

Correction, GoldenEye 64 is on the top 30, but still not on the top ten.

  • EDracon

Doesn't really cunt as #1, it's tied, so no news….. In other news, I just noticed that the Half-Life series is in the top ten (Orange Box).

    • EDracon

      I said count…. why did it censor it…. oh… the "o" didn't register, lol.

  • The Dude

I really hope this is some kind of joke. >_< Ocarina of Time wasn't THAT much of a great game anyway, why are people so blinded with nostalgia? >_<

I REALLY hope that Skyward Sword beats this game for once and for all, so that the gaming community can FINALLY move on.

    • "People" are not blinded with nostalgia. All twenty-five reviews for OoT registered on Gamerankings are old reviews, so it's not like the gaming community is pushing it back up. It's reviews that push Galaxy 2 down.

This is why you should never use Gamerankings to determine the best game ever.

      • TheMaverickk

Exactly there's a huge difference in the amount of reviews that were done in 1998 to that of 2010. I mean OoT has 25 reviews roughly….. by comparison most games today get at least 100 reviews.

It makes it a tough system to beat. It also makes it very easy to fluctuate.

    • X x7

I agree with the part on SS, but you don't have to hate OoT so much, it wasn't that terrible.

      • The Dude

I never said that I hated it, I just find the number of annoying fanboy's that treat the game as if it is GOD!!! even MORE annoying than Navi's "HEY LISTEN'S" >_<

  • Geo

A side note just worth mentioning here 1997, GoldenEye 64 revolutionized the first person shooter. is a false statement. at least as far as FPS go, 1998 Halflife revolutionized the first person shooter. Just saying,

    • Goro

That's something people debate over alot believe it or not. I believe GoldenEye 64 revolutioninized it, but Halflife greatly improved it.

But, I respect your opinion. Mostly because of the counter argument that Halflife was an original FPS, rather than one based after a movie.

  • Icy

    W00t!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jack

STFU The Dude, ocarina of time is a masterpiece of game and we aren’t blinded by nostalgia, there’s a reason why ocarina of time is the best game of all time. and it deserves that spot, do some research so you can learn

    • Deku_Scrub

You're not exactly proving him wrong here…
I don't think Ocarina deserves the top spot, and Galaxy 2 even less.

      • TheMaverickk

The reason why Ocarina of Time has held that top spot for so long is because it was the highest rated game of 1998… during a time when there were a lot less reviewers. Now instead of having to impress only 25 reviewers, there are like 100 active reviewers.

What does this mean? Getting a 97 score today is actually harder then it was 12 years ago.

  • Jack

the game is not poor Goro, not even by today standares, personally i think it aged well and like i said, there's a reason why is in the first place, not because of nostalgia, not because is Zelda, but because this game revolutionized in so many ways the 3D videogames, the only way a game can take the first place if is that game get higher scores than ocarina, super mario galaxy 2 is very close

    • Goro

Not really, Mario 64 revolutionized 3D gaming. No, sorry, I mean Starfox for the SNES did.

As for whether Ocarina of Time is still good by today's standards. I'll say it's average. If Nintendo were to release today unchanged, I would give it a 7.

Also, Nintendo has abused OoT's influence on gaming by using the same formula for 3D Zelda games again and again. Some people I know called Twilight Princess too generic, to which I go as far as agreeing with them.

  • koipen

Didn't Super Mario 64 come before OoT? I repeat: this Ocarina-praise keeps getting more ridiculous each day.

  • Lilcross

    Agreed 100% with Treyforce.

SMG2 is an absolutely amazing game and while it's not my favorite game of all time, I can't think of any other game that deserves the spot more than it.

  • TheMaverickk

The OoT hype and praise is completely out of control. I have to agree with Koipen on this. Each Nintendo game during the N64 brought something new. Super Mario 64 brought in 3D platformer gaming, introducing a very well worked camera system, Ocarina of Time brought in Night/Day mechanics and the Lock-On system. I think most games Nintendo created early in the life of the N64 was bringing something to the table.

    It wasn't just one game.

  • Ham

I don't have anything against OoT, but it's the fanboys that piss me off. You oldfags worship OoT as if it's some sort of god damn bible, just accept the fact that people have moved on, and that there are games out there that people consider better than your oh-so precious Ocarina of Faggotry. Morons.

  • Emicon

Ocarina of Time had been bumped down a long time before you guys here at ZU noticed, since the release of SMG2. Probably all the new Zelda hype and European reviews of SMG2 put Zelda back on top, not ZU's article. Don't give yourselves so much credit. http://kotaku.com/5548644/theres-a-new-mario-in-t

While I agree that OoT's position at the top is only because of nostalgia, I don't think SMG2 should have been the one to knock it off. There was very little that was unique about it (save Yoshi) and I felt it was a watered down version of the original. It hardly had a story and Lubba was completely annoying.

Oot was fantastic and I have nothing but love for it, but that was back in 1998. I know I've played better games since then.

  • dougmm

Its certainly amusing to see that people who like Ocarina Of Time are casually insulted as being too dumb or to blinded with nostalgia while there are so many people on ZU bitching and moaning about how overated the game is.

I'd say that both sides are extreme. OoT was a fantastic game and deserved all the good raitings it got in 1998, but nowadays, its just an okay game. It aged well, but still, its not the best game today.
I am so tired of reading insults against persons who like OoT from the haters, while I also cannot stand the "OMG Ocarina is teh best game eva !!!11" comments anymore.

The community shouldn't praise OoT to much, but it also shouldn't bash the game. Lets embrace OoT for what it was – a good game – but move to the future an give Skyward Swords a fair chance !

  • Zybera

It is possible that SMG2 lost to OOT by a thousandth (could be smaller) of a percent, as SMG2 is listed as No.2 on its page, and OOT is list as No.1. I think if they were tied, they would both be listed as No.1.

    • EDracon

It's going alphabetical order when it's tied. L comes before S.

    • LegendOfHyrule31

Well sucks for you. Hahahahahahahah! Ocarina of Time rules!

  • Just A Comment

Its kinda sad that ZELDA fans are complaining about people showing support for a ZELDA game. :/

You want a Zelda game to be knocked off the top spot just so you can prove a point? Seems pretty desperate.

How about people stop bashing Ocarina and actually APPRECIATE that a Zelda game has held the #1 title for 12 years?

If you don’t like the game, that’s your right, but don’t bash it just because it’s considered one of/the greatest game(s) of all time by many. Sorry that you don’t feel the same way, but take pride that this game is held in such high regard by the entire gaming community.

  • Aleksandar

I knew it would last long haha!

  • Leftyrock91

I'm glad Ocarina of Time has held that spot for 12 years. I hope it continues to, but I wouldn't really care if it did or not. I love Ocarina of Time, even though it's not my favorite, it is still what got me into Zelda to begin with. I have Ocarina of Time to thank for so much. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are tied at #1 for me.

  • Brandon

I don't quite understand the praise that this game gets. I'm not saying it isn't a good game, because it is. In fact, I'm in the middle of playing it right now. I just don't think it's the best game (or even best Zelda game) ever created. For me, it's my fourth favorite game, behind MM, TP, and WW. (Yes, you heard me. I like all other 3D titles more than OoT, even TP) I just think it's overrated for being "revolutionary" when it really wasn't. There were other Nintendo games like SM64 that brought 3D before OoT. OoT fanboys are too closed minded to accept that other games have beaten it. It's sort of shallow and plain. Newer Zelda games have been more complex and deep but OoT fanboys just can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that it's NOT the best game of all time.

  • Matt

Don’t say fanboys anymore please… The internet sucks… I hate it… so much FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!
newfag this… fanboy that… lol ur a weaboo… I’m sick of this shit… please never make another article like this again………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

  • Just A Comment

    @Brandon

While SM64 brought 3D, it didn’t bring an immersive, interactive movie-like experience that Ocarina did. THATS why it’s revolutionary.

By the way, you can’t tell someone their opinion is wrong. People are just as entitled to think Ocarina is the best game ever as they are to think it’s not. What bothers me is when Zelda fans COMPLAIN that the game is overrated – what, you don’t want a Zelda game in the top spot?

You would think as fans this would be a victory we would all be happy for, but I guess not. :/

    • TheMaverickk

Why can't Zelda fans want another game to be awarded the top spot? I think there's some pretty rationale Zelda fans. We all love Zelda sure, but maybe some Zelda fans think it's fair to share that top spot.

Ocarina of Time does deserve top spot, but just as much as say Super Mario Galaxy 2 (or one for that matter). Even Majora's Mask should have that top spot… Star Fox 64 is great too! Some Zelda fans are willing to share the top spot, because even though they may be great Zelda fans, they still think it's fair that another great game share some of the glory.

What is dumb in reality is the competitive nature some fans have. The fact that it's some outrage if Ocarina of Time is dethroned from that spot. Yet it shouldn't matter because all that matters is that people love and play the game if it means that much to them.

  • Just A Comment

What I’m trying to say is this – for those who think Ocarina is overrated – That’s fine; it’s your opinion. I just don’t see what benefits complaining about it gets you. Just accept and respect that it holds the top spot in the hearts of many gamers, and we will accept that it doesn’t hold the top place in yours.

  • James

Look I think Ocarina Of Time is the best game ever made, and I can appreciate that not everyone think the same, but how can anyone say Ocarina Of Time doesn't deserve the top spot and Super Mario Galaxy 2 does? Galaxy 2 doesn't do anything to advance the Mario series, it's just basically the same as the original Galaxy title. Ocarina changed Zelda games, adn it worked so well that Nintendo still rely of Ocarina's mechanics in Zelda games now. The reason people say Galaxy 2 is better is ebcause it's newer. I bet a lot of people comementing on here didn;t even play Ocarina back in 1998, because if you did then there's no way you could think it is overrated.

    • EDracon

actually, the purest review would be if some played the game RIGHT NOW and reviewd it without remembering any memories of the game in the past. When played like that it shows off it's true colors, it's a dull, shallow game. Majora's Mask was the exact opposite, hell, even Twilight Princess and Windwaker are better.

    • Wyndfyre

How does it make OoT a better game because it "changed Zelda games"? That has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself.

  • James

@Brandon: I can appreciate you thinking it's not the best, but how the hell wasn't it revolutionary? It was the first game ever to have a lock on feature, the first game ever with context sensitive button play, it was the longet game Nintendo ever made back in 1998. Those are just a few things I name. Yes Super Mario 64 was the first game to play well in full 3D but Ocarina trounses it, it plays miles better than Mario 64 ever did.

  • James

Those of you who think Ocarina is overated may find this link to be an interesting read.

  • Woooo! 🙂

  • Mario9999

Zelda Ocarina of Time is the best game ever! In it's time this game make all other games like a joke. It's a revolutionary game which was almost perfect in every aspect, mixing a compelling story line, a beautiful OST, the beste graphics avaliable and hours and hours of playing fun.
The people who don't like this kind of game are superficial people who don't take the time to apreciate an aventure of this category, they like hollywood fims and they listen to cheap pop music and I'm almost sure they've never touched a book.
It's a shame that people can't see the greatness of this game…

    • EDracon

Take off your Nostalgia Goggles please.

    • Wyndfyre

You said it yourself: In it's time.

A game being revolutionary doesn't make it the best game ever, that has nothing to do with the game's quality.

I love how you stereotype people who don't like it. So people have to like what you like or they're "superficial". I like the game, but it's not the best game ever. I love "adventures of this category", I hate Hollywood films and love to make fun of 'em, I don't limit myself to one kind of music and listen to all kinds not just "cheap pop", and I am an avid reader. (Besides, what do Hollywood films, pop songs and books have to do with Ocarina of Time? :P)

There is no 'best game ever'; So many types of games–puzzle, adventure, RPG, etc–and since everyone has different preferences, really, it isn't FAIR to decide the best game ever.

  • ROFLLMFAO

i think twilight princess should be on top.

  • U-Turn

    Stfu and be like: "Cool."

  • robloxian00

Me and my friend think it's one of the best games ever, and NO we are NOT fanboys. Although i did think they overdid it with Dark Link and the Monster Hands. Dark Link is harder than Molgera and on top of that, the Monster Hands instantly kill you if they ever attacked you. And they also appear by surprise. Sure there are signs saying "LOOK ON THE ROOF", but if you haven't beaten the boss yet, you can't see them on the roof. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was no better than the original Galaxy as well as New Super Mario Bros. Wii. If they had the WiiMotionPlus compatible with Super Mario Galaxy 2, then it would make sense that it was in the No.1 spot. I mean, it's basically the same as the original Super Mario Galaxy but with Yoshi. If one ever did pass Ocarina of Time, then it would be either Skyward Sword, or a New Super Mario Bros. Wii sequel that features all the same items in New Super Mario Bros. Wii powerups as well as the Mega Mushroom and the Blue Shell (NOT from Mario Kart Wii). My ideas for a New Play control would be Super Mario Sunshine, where to shoot water while stopped, you can aim with the Wii Remote, and to chase and squirt, you can hold C, and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest, which the sword would be controlled as in Twilight Princess, Wii verison, as well as a mirror imaged picture not including any pictures and text, like in Twilight Princess' remake for Wii. Sorry if i'm off topic, anyway, with the 3DS coming out as well as Ocarina of Time 3DS, i think Super Mario Galaxy 2 will remain in the No.2 spot. Don't flame me! Bye!

  • Nick

Ocarina of Time belongs on that #1 spot, not because of nostalgia, but because it is the most entertaining game that has ever been made. No game to date has kept me playing it as much as Ocarina of time did and im not that much of a zelda fanboy to begin with. The controls, gameplay styles and everything about the game are incredibly smooth and it makes for an enjoyable game. As for those who say that it wasn't revolutionary, sorry to say but in fact it was. Thats because the N64 was a revolutionary console. As a child I grew up with these characters like mario and link, however I only knew them as little 2d sprites. The nintendo 64 was the first time that I ever saw any of these characters almost come to life and that experience is a gem that can never be replaced. Maybe someday in the future there will be a new way that you can experience these games that will capture our imaginations the same way the n64 did before but nothing has come about yet. As for those that say the wind waker was a better game, all I will comment is this: spending 20 minutes on a boat with some bug eyed cartoon with nothing to do isnt exactly my kind of game.

  • Wyndfyre

Honestly, just because a game was revolutionary does that mean it deserves #1 all the time?

I'm happy a Zelda game has been #1 for so long. However, I don't think Ocarina of Time really IS the best. There are far better games than it, in the Zelda series included. Yes, it was revolutionary, yes, it was a great game in its time. However, no it's not 1998 anymore, and there are plenty more games which are far better than Ocarina of Time. I have yet to play Super Mario Galaxy 2, I will be able to tonight however, and I'll see what I think of it then.

    • Wyndfyre

They're a bit different in genres to be compared, but I think SMG2 is pretty deserving, to be honest. It's either as good or better than Ocarina of Time. I'm not sure which yet, I still have to play more.

  • LegendOfHyrule31

For all you b****es who think a Mario game deserves this spot, PLEASE LEAVE THIS SITE NOW! You all joined this site because you worship the games that changed the history of gaming. So go join MARIO UNIVERSE if you think a Mario game deserves the #1 spot. Ocarina began a gaming revolution and has changed gaming as we know it.

    • Wyndfyre

If OoT was never made until say a year later than it was really made, some other game like it would've been made instead and people would consider it the best game ever because it was "revolutionary". Then when OoT is finally released… No longer that revolutionary anymore is it. Think about it.

How OoT revolutionized gaming =/= It's quality.

      Thus:

How OoT revolutionized gaming =/= It being the best game ever.

  • In general, I am a skeptic but I think that in this case, I may have stumbled onto something. This time I think I have finally found it! The thing I want to point out here is an inexpensive software that I found that is quite unique in what it does. I’m not going to try to give a complete description here as that would take too long. You really need to take a look at it yourself in order to see the power in it. The software just works, and it only takes one click to complete the basic setup. Honestly, it is that simple but the more you use it (more ‘work’) the more money you can make. This is the most unique money making software you will ever find, it’s totally unique. You don’t even need to spend any money in order to make money with this system. Profit Bank was built to grow on it’s own, competition will never be a problem because the more people that use the software the more money you’ll end up making. Check It Out -> http://adf.ly/1TyEv
