Say bye-bye to the midi and all-sampled instrument soundtracks we have learned to accept in the past. At the Nintendo Roundtable yesterday evening, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will mark the first time an orchestral soundtrack will grace a Zelda game.

Or did he?

During the Q&A session, a question was put to Shigeru Miyamoto about the music of Skyward Sword, whether it would have orchestral music or not. Miyamoto sidestepped the question a bit and said “I don’t think we could do what we did with Mario Galaxy 2 and not try to match that with Zelda.”

While this is not a clear-cut “yes” it certainly can be read as such.

If the music from the Skyward Sword trailer is any indication, we are certainly in for quite a treat!

wait, what? The other console games didn't have…..well, I can understand OoT and MM, but Wind Waker? Twilight Princess didn't have an Orchestrated soundtrack!? well then what the heck was making all those trumpet and bass and……where did the music come from? it sure sounded like an Orchestra. whatever, I don't know anything about music.

I believe though, the only orchestrated song for Twilight Princess was actually the Bonus Track "Don't Want you no more". I just love that piece, and it really has an impact.

Being a musician, this is definitely "Music to my ears" (sorry, bad pun). I've waited so long for this, and to actually hear true orchestration made to be the original is just spectacular. As much as I like to listen to other orchestrations done by others on past pieces, I still hate having those moments where something isn't played quite right…. whether it's a slur, trill, roll, flam , or what not. I'm really looking forward to this, and I can promise that I'll definitely be humming the music for some time to come… even if it is the same music. Koji Kondo is just outstanding, as well as the rest of the team, Kudos them for being to awesome at making the music we love!^^

      • ZeldaGurl_

I think I also forgot to mention that Orchestra Piece number 2 was said to be orchestrated as well. While it was already heard before, it's also the music heard in the new trailer. Great song, full of energy and excitement. Definitely got me into what was going on. I just love all the music!^^

What they should have asked is: WILL THERE FINALLY BE VOICE ACTING???

    • I remember Jak and Daxter and how Jak didn't have to say a thing, Daxter did all the talking. Now several games later, he's got a voice, and I think it didn't work for him at all. I lost interest in the following games… my opinion stands on Link staying the way he is now from seeing the other examples…

    • zELDA faN #1

      hopefully …NOT!!!!!!!

    • Shadow

The Zelda games don't need voice acting. You've clearly never seen the old Zelda cartoon…

      • 209116032

omg leave the Zelda cartoon out of this!!!! YES the game should have voice acting. Its ok if they keep Link silent and make him endure a vow of silence or something relevant to the plot. I'm sick of the effing text boxes if they are in SS I will seriously s*** myself.

  • Gerudude

^ ^ ^ Judging from the demo,: NOPE

  • JSKT

Wait! what about WW? that thing had orchestration!

    • Burd

No it didn't. That was also MIDI.

  • Abodos

No guys, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess didn't have actual orchestras; they used MIDI music in order to simulate an orchestra. Compare the Hyrule Field theme from Twilight Princess with, say, the Good Egg Galaxy theme from Super Mario Galaxy (which was actually orchestrated) and you'll be able to notice the difference.

That said, having an actual orchestra finally grace a Zelda title is probably one of the happiest pieces of news I've heard all year.

  • Thareous33

If it sounds anything like the orchestrated version of the Hyrule Field theme on the Twilight Princess soundtrack, then I am all for it. But that was probably MIDI's also, though. ;-]

  • Sir GamesAlot

well i do hope it does have orchestrated music it needs to its 2010 come on nintendo.

  • Guest

    will Koji Kondo compose it???

    • ZeldaGurl_

Most likely, he's too valuable to NOT be the composer. I know that in the more recent games like Spirit Tracks, there was also Toru Minegishi, Asuka Ota, and Manaka Tominaga in on the music. It was a great game with great music, and I still listen to the music whenever I get the chance.

Bottom line, Zelda is by far the best gaming series, with the best production team, and the best music. Lets hope and pray that Skyward Sword is going to be the next fan favorite, in all the aspects. I'm sure it'll be pretty dog-on dapper, if I do say so myself.^^

  • LadyIntomoe

Agreeing entirely with Abodos, this is perhaps one of my only wishes for the next console Zelda. If it follows through, I will be ecstatic. Although I wasn't sure about the graphics by my first view of the trailer, the more I watch it, the more I like it. Once they clean up some of those hard corners and edges, I'm guaranteed we'll all like it even more. All I need is a story, and the game will be complete for me.

    —Spoiler Alert!—

You know, I read an opinion elsewhere that I liked too, saying that perhaps the mood of the music and graphics change once we're on earth…

    —Spoilers End—

With this in mind, the story should add mood to the orchestrated score! -Mood that the music needs!

    • ZeldaGurl_

Yes yes yes. I couldn't agree more. I'm also praying that we'll be just as happy with the look of the rest of the characters, whether it's someone new, or one of our old time friends, like Princess Zelda… I think that's who I'm most eager to see, besides Link. 😀

  • if skyward sword really is to have an orchestral soundtrack, i will assuredly soil my shorts with excitement.

  • Leftyrock91

I hate it the rumor about choosing left or right handed wasn't true. Sad. I'd like to play it left handed, but oh well. I'm excited for orchestrated music though.

  • Aleksandar

Too, bad they couldn´t use it in TP in the YEAR 2006!

Nintendo is really behind, they need to get with the time, I can´t understand why they simly can´t do that.

But regarding the art style of the game.

Remember Link (commiting suicide HEHE) jumping of the cliff/mountain whatever at the end?

And than the teaser is over…

I really really wonder what comes after that, maybe they´re gonna still surprise us with the finished game, maybe they didn´t wanna show, what the earth the "evil land" looks like, probably darker and grittier and more realistic (COULD BE!)

Just thinking about that makes me F*****G excited, let alone if it´s true!

But oh well only a few more months of damn anticipation!!

  • Dani

If Koji Kondo is the composer, my life will be complete. :3

    • ZeldaGurl_

I'm with ya there.^^ He's a musical genius. I couldn't imagine the series without him!

  • arcticlizard

Kondo will surely work on the music but I think that Mahito Yokota will also, as I believe he worked on TP as well as galaxy music.

  • IT"S ABOUT FUCKIN' TIME KOJI KONDO! IT'S ABOUT FUCKIN' TIME THEY DID ORCHESTRA MUSIC FOR A ZELDA GAME!

  • ooccoowarrior

I would really love to see this happen. Orchestral music is the best form of music for the best game.

  • Steelslasher

The music in the trailer is in the Twilight Princess OST, its titled Twilight Medley and tbh the TP trailer music was much better.

  • OH. MY…I am one happy little girl. If the compositions are anywhere near as gorgeous as they were in Twilight Princess (and that was MIDI!), we are in for a treat.

  • anonymous

Fantastic. I loved the orchestrated mario galaxy music. I can't wait to hear a new zelda soundtrack orchestrated. However, I do hope that there will be SOME electronic sounds integrated WITH the orchestra for the temples. The Lakebed temple music for example I thought fit perfectly for a Water temple, and that was predominately synthesizers. It will be interesting to see what nintendo decides to do.

  • DragonRage

Wow. In Twilight Princess I thought they actually had an orchestra play the music, not us MIDI. So if that was MIDI, I wonder how it would sound with an actual orchestra! I was excited about the game and just thinking about the soundtrack makes me want the game NOW! 😀

  • PePPeR the RJ

The music in the trailer wasn't new, though it was an orchestra playing it. It was from the Twilight Princess soundtrack I got (I think from pre-ordering it? Or maybe I bought it?) I think Zelda games have long deserved to have a live orchestra soundtrack, and I'm really excited to hear what Koji Kondo is stirring up in his pot of awesome composing and arranging skills. Let the music begin!

  • Hettman

    I hope this works!

Who are the actual composers? I know Toru Minegishi will contribute a lot as usual now.

  • BaigL

Oh my Nayru, I am more excited about the music in Skyward Sword than the actual game!!! And that's saying something, (I'm a huge fan :D) I LOVE ORCHESTRATED MUSIC!!!!!!!!! Now Zelda as classical? Oh my Nayru.

  • Ryan

You know voice acting might be nice…… however im leaning far from it, voice acting would kill the legend of zelda feeling, on the count that your supposed to feel like YOU ARE link and HIS voice would actually BE YOUR OWN…. so voice acting will be a big turn off for me… personaly
