So, the reviews for Super Mario Galaxy 2 are hitting the web, and so far, it’s not doing too shabby:

– IGN: 10/10
– EDGE: 10/10
– Examiner: 100/100
– Escapist: 100/100
– GameXPlain: 100/100
– GameTrailers: 9.7/10
– Game Informer: 9.25/10
– DigitalChumps: 100/100
– Official Nintendo Magazine: 97/100
– Famitsu: 92.5/100
– Wired: 90/100

If we count these scores the average stands at 97.2, placing it as the 3rd best-received game of all time, behind Ocarina of Time (~97.6) and the original Super Mario Galaxy (~97.3) according to Game Rankings.

Even though these numbers will certainly change a bit, nothing can change the fact that Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks like it’s going to be not only one of the best games on the Wii console, but one of the best games of all time.

We’re going to take this opportunity to write a special non-Zelda review of Super Mario Galaxy 2 in the coming weeks, but for now it looks pretty obvious: Galaxy 2 is a must-buy.

What does this have to do with The Legend of Zelda franchise? The answer is: nothing.

      This line ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • sugar

Wow! You're a rather perceptive person! With that considered, you should also know that ZU does sometimes report on general Nintendo news, including other games. That's probably why there's an article category entitled, "Gaming/Nintendo News".

      • Dax

Haha, I knew I was going to piss someone off ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Dax

And, regardless of whether or not there's a separate Nintendo/Other Gaming section, I have a question…WHY is there a separate section for other Nintendo games? There's already a glut of Nintendo-in-general fansites, a Zelda fansite should stick to Zelda-related news and info. That's my humble opinion, anyways.

          • Leroy

We already have lots and lots of Zelda news ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • For the love of. For the last time, we held a poll and people voted that they wanted general Nintendo news during downtimes of Zelda news. Don't like it? Go somewhere else.

    • … Zelda is a Nintendo franchise and so is Mario?

  • Asci

    good comments everyone

  • Chainoftermina

it looks exactly like the first one except with new power ups and yoshi. I'll probably get it eventually, but I still need to buy Bioshock 2 and I don't have enough money to spare for a Mario game.

What's the big deal with the Mario Galaxy games? I mean the first one was good but I certainly wouldn't give it a 10/10. The Zelda games are way better. I enjoyed the first one, but i got bored after a while. I think I'll still pick this one up, though.

    • STUFF2o

SMG1 was amazing! I'd put it up there with Ocarina of Time! (and the stats say so, too)

      • Dax

Who cares what the "stats" say? You don't have your OWN opinion on something, you need validation from websites? And why do people compare Ocarina of Time to Mario Galaxy 1 or 2? They're different types of games. It's like comparing King's Quest 2 to Killzone 2.

Nintendo's run out of ideas, they're being lazy with this game. Makes me worried about any originality (or lack of) we'll see in another Zelda game for the Wii.

        • Jason Rappaport

I'd play the game before you knock it. You're being a bit harsh on a game that isn't even released yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • STUFF2o

My general opinion is "SMG1 was amazing! I'd put it up there with Ocarina of Time!" The part about the stats just means that other people agree with me.

        • Um, the SMG2 wasn't made because they ran out of ideas, it was made because they had TOO MANY ideas for the first one and couldn't use them all.

    • Chainoftermina

I kinda agree with this guy. the Mario games have been kind repetitive. yeah, I know Zelda could be considered repetitive since ALTTP, but the Mario games are all so……..the same old crap! there's barely ANY story, and sometimes there isn't even one. each Mario game is just "do this obstacle course" over and over and over. seriously, what's the difference in gamplay between SMG and SM64? other than the fact that there's no gravity sometimes.

Zelda doesn't just has goodgame play, but it has entire worlds with all sorts of people in it, new twists and plots, interesting items to use, and (as articles on this very website have proven) complex characters and story lines. the Mario games are just "oh no, something happened and now Mario has to jump over stuff, onto stuff, and not fall off stuff. and run. woo hoo."

My favorite Mario game is Mario Sunshine, cause that is the only Main series Mario game that actually has something close to resembling an actual story line. and even that kinda phases off into nothing. I also like F.L.U.D.D., which is a nice breath of fresh air from all the JUMP JUMP JUMP!

this isn't to say I don't like the Mario games, I do, it's just that the Mario games just have really good gameplay, but nothing more. really good game play is important, but I want something more than that in a game.

      • It's Mario, it's not supposed to have story. Miyamoto has come on and said this enough. He hates complicated plots and doesn't want them in Mario.

        • Chainoftermina

ok then thats fine. I wasn't exactly saying Mario SHOULD have a story, I was just saying that it doesn't and thats why I like Zelda better.

and I'm pretty sure Miyamoto doesn't 'hate' complex stories, other wise Zelda wouldn't have them. Or what about this new Metroid game? that story looks much more complex than the story of any other Metroid game. And I'm sure lots of other Nintendo games have had good plots. He doesn't "hate story" he just thinks gameplay is more important than story, and in some cases, it is. I'm not saying Mario is bad I'm just explaining why I prefer Zelda over Mario.

  • Darkstar

I love the music in SMG and the new commercials for part 2. I still have to beat part 1 lol

  • Rohan

I have to agree with Alex on this one. The best thing about SMG was its fantastic soundtrack, I can't get enough of it. But really, SMG isn't a "groundbreaking" game. Ocarina of Time (rated 0.3 above SMG) was THE defining game of it's era, and we can still see the effects of OoT on gaming today (things like the lock on system, and adventure RPG elements). SMG, on the other hand, was just Super Mario 64, but in space. Sure the graphics and gameplay was top notch and the gravity puzzles were entertaining, but I think that only games like Ocarina of Time (in terms of influence) deserve a 97+ score. That said, I can't wait for SMG 2, it looks great. "it looks exactly like the first one except with new power ups and yoshi," and that is exactly why I will buy it.

Just so you guys know, Game Informer didn't give it a 10. They gave it a 9.25/10.

Probably the lowest score that anyone gave it lol.

I’ve played/beaten Super Mario 64 and am in the middle of SM Sunshine. Actually fifteen shines off from the middle, but whatever. I am ecstatic to see Yoshi is being featured in the new Galaxy game, as he is my favorite Mario character, with respect to your own opinions. I wish I’d already considered buying the first game; however I have had Zelda Wii set as my next goal. Mario games don’t appeal to some more LoZ.

    • Thareous33

      To some more *than* LoZ.

the three video games I want this summer.
    The Legend of Zelda Wii
    Mario galaxy tow
    and monster hunt tri.

    • Keith

ZWii isn't coming this summer. xD Earliest is Q4 of the year (aka Oct-Dec).

  • GenoKID

Well I'm stoked, for one. I like Mario almost as much as Zelda (and personally, Mario could beat Link in a fight, hands down, heck, Mario could even beat Chuck Norris).

    • Beyond.Nooblike

      I doubt that.

Chuck Norris once finished Super Mario Bros. without using the Jump-Button.

      • Thareous33

If Chuck Norris were to run for president, his slogan would be "Yes, I can."

      • Keith

I heard when he got to the first castle the Princess was there because the game didn't want to risk pissing him off with "the princess is in another castle".

        • GenoKID

A paper plumber can whup a wimpy cowboy anyday.

  • i'm buying this game this morning, got it on pre-order, i beat the first one with mario and luigi.

  • Valdek

EXCUSE ME!!!!! WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY GenoKID?!!!!!
CHUCK NORRIS IS BEYOND AWESOME!!!!(by the way, Mario isn’t always paper stupid)on a side note: if we are going to talk about other games other than Zelda(I’m all for that)why not anything about Halo3… or at least Halo Reach

    • GenoKID

Paper Mario makes REGULAR Mario look pathetic, I can't imagine what that makes Chuck Norris look like….

    • mazelroid

because Halo sucks ass and bad if compared to Mario, and isn't even nintendo made game unlike zelda or mario.

  • Leroy

Idk if you saw it yet, but SMG2 is now equal to OOT with 97,57% ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Just A Comment

I really hope OoT remains #1. SMG2 may be a great game, but as others have said, it’s not nearly as revolutionary for its era as OoT was. Some may say OoT is over-rated, but I fully believe it deserves all the praise it gets.

  • Wicked

SMG wasn't just a mario 64 in space. There is so much in the game as far as content, puzzles, obstacles, etc. The use of gravity and angles is astounding. To denounce it as just a mario is a bit insulting. I never got bored. Each level and star presents something completely different than the last. OOT can well deserve to stay in #1, but saying SMG2 doesn't deserve it's rating merely because it's getting close to OOT is just ignorance. I've waited a long time for another mario like 64, and they went above and beyond what I expected.
