LoZ.com has recently launched an article series which offers critique on different aspects of the Zelda series. In their first article, they discussed the Triforce, calling it just a plot coupon and suggesting that it could have a much larger role in the series.

Yesterday, they released part 2, in which they discuss Link and come down heavily on his lack of character development, lack of motivation and over-reliance on sidekicks.

What do you think? Does Link need a revamp, or should he stay the way he currently is?

link's character is presently designed for the character to base his personality on their own experience in the game.

maybe a few more defined facial expressions here and there, and some snappy banter (via body language)

also, the triforce does seem to have a lot more potential than what Nintendo uses it for.

The sear words and offensive language weren't needed in these articles. If you have a problem with other people's theories, than there is a nice way to say it.

  • Hylian99

Hmmm…I have to say I disagree with almost everything in this article.

I can't help but just hate the fact that these discussions will go on forever. Personally I don't want Link to have installed base motivation.

Why? Simple… cause I've never felt he lacked motivation. His motivation was my own motivation… my initiative to save the princess, to save Hyrule, and put an end to what conflict was occurring. This all comes back to Link being something aking to an avatar, or being the "link" between the player and the world of Hyrule.

TO me that's what has always made Zelda series so great. I can play some games once or twice… but Zelda always keeps me coming back cause it allows me a lot more freedom in how I feel or react to a situation. In other games I seem more like an interactive viewer. Like I'm watching a movie where I take some control from one cinematic scene to the next.

In anycase I can't help but disagree with the overall sentiments at LoZ… let Zelda games be the games be what they are.

    • ZeldaGurl_

Mhmm, you've got the right thing going, Maverickk! I totally agree with you, except I think that maybe Link should show just a little bit more urgency every now and then. I mean come on, it's not like you're going to be able to play the game without saving the Princess (or whatever you have to save in the next game to come). I love Link as much as I love Zelda, so don't change them to where they aren't themselves….

And BTW, I found out that the name "Link" in many languages, means left-handed. Well duh, who do we know that's left-handed?? Hmm, I found that out a short time ago, and I think that that just adds even more to the mystery of the plot Nintendo has made for us…..

When it comes to Link, don't change him, I think the average percentage of zelda fans like him just the way he is. Personally I liked to think, when playing OOT that he was somewhat scarred and stopped talking because of a incident in the beginning of his life.

Remember that he suffers from nightmares in the game, and in his dreams he could see the future but when he got to the point in real life he could also change it in the way he wanted it to be. Or put it this way, you could change it! So I agree with the ones that said that it kind of makes you feel that you are in the game yourself, it's an escape from reality.

When it comes to the triforce, I think they should kind of refresh the legend of it, make new scenes or happenings that the power of the triforce makes occur.

  • halvdanson

Maybe Link should learn to control it in a way, or even better, the story of how he got it. Maybe they should make a story that is a lot more darker and melancholic, which in the end explains the story of link and the story of why he is the one that has the one part of the triforce. Maybe the triforce has guardians which are inherited by blood. Maybe by family-blood? Link's family, the royal family and the gerudo's. Maybe the gerudo people was guardians in the beginning before they became thiefes? Or maybe they killed the guardians and stole that part of the triforce?

I think if they could make a story similar to what I have mentioned it would be an awesome game!!

  • FamiCube64

I still hope Nintendo doesn't give Link a voice. Think about it: What do you think Link should sound like? A little kid? A Japanese man? An American? A woman? No matter how well Nintendo does it, fans will be disappointed. At the very, very least give us an option to turn off his voice.

I agree with Crazymallets. I can't take either one of these articles seriously with the amount of swear words in them. Find another way to articulate your point without resorting to those words to emphasize what you're trying to say.

And if you really hate the silent Link that much, perhaps you should find another series to play.

I didn't bother to read them, the construciton of the sentences and the use of swearing made me ignore it automatically.

And I agree, if he hates silent Link, he should find another game. But, maybe Miyamoto/Anouma should try to create a story behind why he doesn't talk? It could actually improve the game. Make it a lot darker.

I think he's fine just the way he is. Nothing needs to be done. But thats my opion.

As usual, "voice" is the only thing that anyone takes away from an article like this, and they automatically reject it. 😛

There were multiple suggestions for improvement, not just him having lines.

I agree with the article one hundred percent.

Swearing doesn't bother me in the slightest, and as such, I could see his points, most of you were more than likely just "AAAH SWEAR WORDS IN MAH ZELDA ARTICLES" and disregarded what the guy had to say.

First he says that the story is bad or mediocre and than complains when it's told in a cut scene.
he wants it to be more like FF, but they are full of cut scenes.
And the rest is the same as all the others: Link must talk etc.

link should stay the same… end of discussion

if link did speak, then we should be able to chose what he says from a list of options, otherwise, he should stay the same.

    Link should have a beard.

    • Jade

I don't mean to be mean but I think Link should not have a beard. He should stay the way he is.Sorry to disapoint you.

  • Taersx

Evidently the current formula is working out just fine, because we keep coming back to play it.

If there are people who want a different experience from what they're currently getting… that's what all those other games are for, right?

  • Lules

I hate how the writer tries to be funny. Maybe Link needs a bit more personality, yeah, but why bash his design? Really. Stupid article.

  • LuX

I think Link could have alot more personality to him, without him being defined, so that he is still the Link between, the player and the game. But I do think that Zelda and Hyrule does need a revamp, well not nessecairly need one, but it wouldn't hurt, I like how Midna had voice acting I assume she was speaking Hylian, I would love for that to be in Zelda game (but not for Link) if all characters spoke Hylian, because then you could hear emotion in the voice, much like how i prefer to watch Japanese Anime, its becuase the Japanese voices have more flair and emotion. although I cant fluently speak Japanese so the subtitles are needed.

  • TriforceObtainer

About the voice in the game id say no i mean with the flow of the game it doesnt need it.

But seriously they need some more decisions like

Zelda: Link what will we do!?!

Link points to the triforce and obtains it

    or…

link stands back and defeats gannon

ok link does not talk because you the player talk for him

  • Jade

Link is a wonderful character and should not be changed.
His appearance should stay the way it is.Whoever says he should be changed is wrong.
